NewB building 1st bike under$300 need advice!

This site is by far the goldmine for information. I'm starting my first ever bike build and trying to stay under $300. I know it's tough but CL will be my site to get parts as well as EBAY. I'll be installing everything myself as I got a LBS tools to use at any time I don't need the lightest part but just getting something that'll work. First item bought is a frame, BMC CX01, link below. List of things I need or will need.

    Frame: BMC CX01 56cm $32
    Fork:
    Handlebar:
    Wheels & Tires:
    FD:
    RD:
    Shifters:
    Seat Post:
    Crank:
    Bottom bracket:

First question, what would be the next item to buy? I'm looking at forks at the moment but unsure of which ones. I believe I need a 1 1/8 diameter fork.

First check the head tube diameter, is it tapered or uniform diameter both top and bottom? Then check what kind of headset that frame requires. Then check what bottom bracket you'll need/want. Then check your frame to make sure the bottom bracket shell and head tube don't need to be faced (if it does, make sure whoever does the work is competent). Then have the headset pressed in and bottom bracket cups pressed or threaded in, then I'd worry about the fork and the rest.

That's how I'd do it, but there will be disagreement to follow this post.

    Junior,

Thanks for replying. I will take pictures to make sure if it's Tapered or uniform, im assuming tapered. Also, how would I go about checking what kind of headset that my frame requires?

Basic research on frame should give that info, either from BMC's site or google, maybe even here. As far as the taper, it will be readily visible.

    Headtube: 1 and 1/8th I believe.
Bottom Bracket: 68mm English or BSA.
    Rear Axel: 130mm.
    Seattube ID: 31.6mm

Any CX fork will be fine, but will need to be cantilever as your rear brakes are only cantilever, I believe.

This was the fork recommended/sold by vendors when it was available.

So if you get something along those lines, you should be quite safe in terms of maintaining the geometry of the bike.

Are there some zeros missing in the OP? $32 for a BMC frame? Is it cracked? $300 for a total build cost? A decent used wheelset costs more than that.
