Is it possible to covert an 8 speed downtube shifter to 9?

I currently have a brand new pair of 8 speed Shimano downtube shifters (running on Kelly Take-Off's) that I am interested in converting to 9 (or 10) speed. Is this possible to do and keep my existing shifters? Would replacing the backing plate accomplish this change? thanks!!!

Probably not, but you should be able to get some 9 speed downtube shifters on Ebay at 1/2 price.
If your opinion differs from mine, ..........Too bad.

Buying parts to hang on your bike is always easier than getting fit.

... you'll have to use your DT shifters in friction mode... as opposed to indexed.
