    Rattling Shimano ST-RS685 hydro levers

    Hello.

I have bought a 2nd hand bike that came with the Ultegra hydraulic disc groupset. The ST-RS685 levers seem to rattle, they do it if I lift the front end of the bike and drop it. And it's certainly the levers since while riding, when you ride on the hoods and wrap your hands tightly around them, they are quiet. But the rattle is especially bad if your hands are on the drops and nowhere near the levers..

I have tried to gather answers from all over, I have found out that the "name plates" can become loose. This is checked and it rattles with the name plate detached. Someone suggested that loose cable ends could rattle, but the rattle happens with cable tension on, too.

The levers had sloppy fitting hoods, they wouldn't sit tight after opened once, for accessing the bleed port. So I thought maybe the hoods are not wrapping around the lever snug enough, so I got a new pair of hoods. No help.

What else should I look at? Any tip is appreciated.

Have you adjusted the free stroke, or is that wound all the way in? As you adjust it and the bottom of the lever moves closer to the bar, the top moves away and it gives the lever some backwards travel. There's not a whole lot of resistance to movement, so that could create a rattle in some situations, maybe. I sort of doubt it, but at least worth a check.

Grab the top of the levers (the little indent under the silver cap) and see if it moves backwards. If so, maybe reset the free stroke to zero and see if anything changes.

Aside from that, I guess there could be something broken internally.

Ah yes, good thinking! Both free stroke and reach had been adjusted for bleeding, to get the maximum amount of juice in. So.. free stroke itself did not change it, but narrowing the reach 4 clicks did! So now they are solid and rattle free.

    Thank you very much!

That's my guess. The screw is backed out and not touching the lever.
