    replacing rear derailleur

I am running my cross bike in a 1X set-up, consisting of parts I had around.
The shifter is an older Shimano bar end type. The cassette and chain are both 9 speed, Shimano.
I wouldn't mind getting something a little a better than the Sora (9 speed) rear derailleur.
Is a 10 speed road Shimano derailleur compatible with a 9 speed Shimano cassette and chain ?
I am handy enough to do adjustments, but would like to start out with stuff that works together.
