Okay; i have a component group that is all Shimano 9 speed Ultegra 6500. Only part of a different set is the Dura-Ace rear der that is also 9 speed. With this set up everything worked perfect!!
I took the component group off the bike and put it on a different frame; in doing so i had to get a new front der. because of a difference in clamp diameter. Not realizing there was a difference i purchased an Ultegra "6600" front der. which is 10 speed and a bit narrower. With everything mounted up I found it impossible to get the front der to run quiet due to cross-talk chain rub of the what im guessing is the 9 speed chain being too wide. I
I measured the 6500 front der and it is approx 15mm wide while the 6600 is about 13mm wide at the same point of measure.
I have two questions.
1) Will my Dura-Ace 9 speed (I think called 7500) work properly with a 10 speed chain? Im thinking it will as i did search and it appears many are running 10 speed chains on 9 speed groups.
2) Will my Ultegra 6500 STI (9 speed) front shifter be an issue with shifting the 6600 designated 10 speed front der? Im thinking it should be fine as the 6500 front shifter has a couple little shim half clicks built within it. All of this is for only a double ring up front.
Im working on buying a 2011 Ultegra Group but it won't be ordered for about two weeks so i want to get my bike up and running. Im not opposed to buying a 10 speed chain if thats pretty much all i need to quiet things up and get it up and running as it should.
