I just bought a Ridley X-Fire and a Chorus kit (with standard 135mm carbon crank). I'm stoked. I also have an Excalibur running Chorus throughout, including compact UT crank.
I want to run a single ring on the X-Fire. I ordered the standard BCD crank thinking I would switch the compact to my X-Fire and use the standard UT crank on the road bike.
It turns out I didn't do enough homework. I can't find any 40-42 chainrings for the compact, or a chainguard that I *know* will fit. The new campy carbon cranks are apparently bizarre that way.
Now it appears that I must use the standard 135mm bcd crank on the X-Fire, but I am having similar difficulties in finding chainrings and guards to run a single.
I found a 42t ring for the 135mm crank that I will use in conjunction with the standard 39t inner ring as a double for this weekend's race. I would like to go single on this asap though. Ideally I'd like to go single ring using the compact crank so the standard can remain unmolested once installed on the Excalibur.
So, my questions:
1. Is anybody running a 40-42 single on the new campy Chorus/Record UT compact cranks (with a guard or guards)? If yes, then how?
I saw a guy running a single ring on a standard UT crank this weekend. I didn't ask what size ring he was running. But it was setup with a ring guard on the outside (looked just like the one on your link to Cyclocrossworld.com) and on the inside he was running a n-gear jump stop, instead of a second plate. It looked like the kit, in the link you posted, came with the ring, so that and a jumpstop is all you should need. I have used this on my shimano cranks and Bontrager cranks ( both with integrated BB spindle) and it works great no clearence issues all the way up to 44t. Your LBS can get them through QBP for $10-12.
Finding a 40-42 tooth chainring and guard to fit a Campy carbon compact crank is going to be really difficult. Campy, why did you have to come up with a new compact road chainring standard when 110mm was already there? It might be possible to modify a normal 110mm BCD chainring and guard to fit (only one bolt hole is in a different location), but that would be a lot of work.
The easy solution is to put the compact crank on your road bike, and use the 135mm BCD crank on your cross bike. You already have the 42 tooth ring, now all you need is an outer 135mm BCD guard and an inner N-Gear Jump Stop, both of which you can buy from Cyclocrossworld.
You are out of luck for cross rings for the Campy compact. The best you can do is 48/36 double setup using TA rings. It is quite easy to find rings in the 39 to 46 tooth range for your 135mm bcd standard crank though. Just get a 42 and then pick up a 135mm bcd chainguard from cyclocross world. My wife is running that setup on her cross bike this season and it works fine. I'm running a 46/39 setup on my chorus cranks, using a TA outter ring.
Are your Chorus cranks the newer ones, with the fifth bolt on the crank arm, or are they old school, with five spider arms? I've got a newer Record crank (135mm) that I'd like to use with a TA Vento outer 46, but can't tell whether this will work, whether I need to fiddle with washers to make it work, etc.

I just wrote in my post that that very setup works fine. If it's 135mm bcd, you've got nothing to worry about. It's only the Campy compact cranks that are screwed up. This is because 4 of their mounting tabs are at 110mm, while the 5th is 113mm. Pretty retarded on their part. It's really a shame they did that, because the new UT cranks are so nice.

UPDATE: It looks like I'm going to have a unique Campy carbon UT compact setup!
My good friend Dean from Pedal Dynamics in Seattle and I swung by our local friends at FSA and picked up a 110 bcd BMX 40t chainring. It's brutal. Anyway, we removed a little bit of material around the 5th bolt hole and it looks like it's going to work! Salsa's 110mm crossing guard chainguard also fits. We're in business. Unfortunately I roasted a chainring bolt (and those campy bolts are ridiculously expensive and I don't have any spares) so I probably won't get to race the new bike this weekend.
This is not an ideal solution, of course, but at least the chainring is still centered (i.e. not "biopaced") and it has four unmolested bolt holes for security. If this setup fails I am going to throw the TA rings onto the crank.
I'll be racing pretty much everything in WA this season, so if you want to see the setup look for the guy with the X-Fire running Chorus (and sexy Flexus tubulars).
