Help needed for first time cyclocross purchase!

Hi guys, I am new to this site and this is actually my first ever post! I have been riding hard tail mountain bikes for around 5 years but now feel a need to change things up a little (or a lot!) and fix myself up with a faster ride. Cyclocross seems to be the way to go for me as although I now do the majority of my riding on the roads I still enjoy flying along a dirt track as much as the next man.

Due to previous experience and current ownership I have been very biased towards Marin in searching for my first cyclocross bike and am therefore calling out to all you bike buffs to help me broaden my search and find the perfect bike!

how much do you want to spend?

    SRAM or Shimano?
    Cantilever brakes or disc brakes?

figure out what you want .... so that you can then focus on which models to consider.
2010 Specialized Secteur Elite upgraded with 32T cassette and does not have Stan's (yet)
2009 Specialized Rockhopper Comp 29er upgraded with 36T cassette and Stan's Arch EX rims and tubeless. Considering a 1x10 upgrade
2013 Cannondale CAADX-6 Tiagra upgraded to 32T cassette and Stan's Alpha 400 rims and tubeless
2008/2009 Burton T6 156cm with Burton Triad Bindings & DC Judge boots

Hi ted, I'm thinking of spending in the region of £900 (may go higher if need be) but am unsure on what sort of quality I can get for that price. I think disk brakes are a must have purely for the security and peace of mind of having that extra braking power behind me. As for components, I only have experience with shimano and as yet have had no problems with them.

Thanks for the advice, I'll get searching!

Help needed for first time cyclocross purchase!

Since you appear to be in the UK there are a number of manufacturers available there. Maybe check out the Evans Cycles website as I think they carry a decent range.

The Merida Cyclocross 4 is particularly good value.
