If you build it up with a solid (non-suspension) fork it would work, but it will not be an ideal cross bike. Standard road bike frames work best, the main differences are weight (try throwing a mountain bike over your shoulder a few dozen times in an hour and see how many bruises you get), and geometry (much easier to sling a road bike inspired frame with the open geometry over your shoulder). Tires are also make a big difference (rolling resistance, size, etc.).

Courses are always designed to favor a cross specific bike over a mountain bike.

yeah....what Konaman said. a caldera frame would build up a just "alright" cross bike. unless you already have the frame and you're looking for a challenge, i would just go out and buy a cross-specific frame/bike.

    www.greenfishsports.com

$199 for a Redline Conquest frameset (frame + fork)
$299 for a Redline Conquest Pro frameset (limited sizes)

Also check out Monk Cycles from a thread down below for a cheap frame.

Don't buy a mountain bike frame for cross.
    Pro rep, yo!
