question for those who wear bibs during a race

do you wear a base layer under or just your jersey over? I hate being hot during a race.

    depends on the weather.

I'll wear a summer base layer(ss or sleeveless) sub 55.
    I'll wear a winter base layer(ls) sub 45.

If its wet, I'll dress warmer than the temp.

bibs go on first then layer goes on top of the straps, i got a base layer with windstopper in the front for the real cold days, it leaves my shoulders exposed though. You can just wear a second jersey too.

    no no......this is all wrong.

base layer then bib with the base tucked into the bibs and jersey / jacket over that.

This. I have a light C9 SS base I use around 60 degrees, below that and it is an Icebreaker 200 SS wool base. I use a thin or thick set of arm warmers depending on temps. Today (low 50s) I had the icebreaker and thicker arm warmers (with bib knickers/SS jersey), which is what I wear all the way down to the mid-30s.

^^This^^ And jes*s c-lo, isn't this a common sense question? If it's hot I don't wear a base layer. If it's cooler, I do. If it gets even cooler, arm warmers. Seems kinda easy....

My $.02 if its less than 90 out, I've got a base layer on. May be real thin, but its on.

I want the jersey to slide on the base if something happens. Beats me sliding on the ground...

I had on an open mesh (Garneau) base layer and a thin wool layer on at Hyattsville. I was on the warm side of comfortable but not 'hot.' I coulda lost either of the layers and been fine.

Always base layer UNDER the straps. Over the straps is as backwards as tights under your shorts!

Quite the discussion you've stirred up.

For me, it depends on the weather. Pretty much the same as any other day on the bike.

I plan to run a little hotter when I'm racing. So I might wear a jacket or something while I check out the course and even into warmup in order to suffer in comfort during the actual race.

Cut arm and head holes in a trash bag.

    Continue as normal.

Don't like the sound of that at all. I guess once the gun goes off that's the least of our worries. I'm incapable of even envisioning wearing a layer under my bibs, I'll have to try it sometime, seems like it would get all lumpy.

Yeah, baselayer under bib. If it's compression-wear, you won't even notice it later except for being comfortable.

I prefer my bibs over my t-shirt. Then I just have to worry about keeping my tube socks pulled up...

Base layer, then bibs, then jersey.

Is this a serious question? It all depends on the temp during the race.

The compression tee's (under armor) are awesome. If it's really hot... I just wear the jersey. Otherwise I wear the UA tee.
