Wheels for 2012 Specialized CruX Comp Disc Apex

I just picked up my new Specialized CruX Comp Disc Apex bike and would like to change out the wheels. I am brand new to cyclocross / cycling and was looking to get some opinions on which wheels to get. My budget is $400 to $600 for the new wheel set.

    Thanks.

I bought a Stan's Crest 29er wheelset for mine. They're fairly light and within your budget.

What are these wheels for? Recreation? Road? Racing?

What features are you looking for? Light weight? Durability?

I'm using mavic speedcity wheels but I'm looking to either upgrade or pick up some light SS disc wheels for racing.

I am just looking for something different than with what they came with. My idea is to have a second set of wheels that I could put road tires on and switch them out when I like.

Crests would probably be bad then if you want to use high pressure road tires. As would all the Stans rims except for the Alpha, I think. If you want to use wider touring tires at around 70 PSI, most 29er wheelsets will work fine.

For narrow tires I would get some normal light road rims and have them laced to whatever disc hubs fit in your budget.

Could I put a road type tire on the stock wheel and put my existing tire on the new wheel set?

Yes. I've used the stock wheels with 700x28 slick tires.

some people have stated that the standard road rim holes for the spokes are not going to be strong enough to handle braking at the hub.

I don't know this for sure and have never personally tested it but just something to discuss

    Disc Wheels

Check with Rob at PSIMET dot com. He just built up a set of disc carbon tubulars for his new Crux frame. I've got some Major Toms he built for me and they're great. I'm sure could build something within your budget.
