I rode my Karate Monkey single speed last year, for a while as a commuter then off-road. A neighbor loaned me his road bike because he felt sorry for me trying to road-out the monkey. his road bike was nice but I drove myself crazy with those STI shifters- I would guess I shifted 30 times on a 7 mile ride. He said not to shift, which is fine; so why carry the excess drive train stuff if I'm not gonna use it?
I'm a sucker for a nice wheel set, so I bought these Phil Woods with Mavic T-520's off the 'Bay. I also got some 165mm cranks; the skinny tires were a problem last year with 175 cranks.
Is this ever fun! 3 mile rides on Sat and Sun, and 15 mi on Monday. Pretty flat, a few stop signs and traffic lights. The Bontrager Courier bars were claimed by my wife so the 2nd and 3rd rides were with Jones H-bars. The bike is a bit of a porker, about 24#, but the miles just fly by.
Now I have 2 sweet wheel sets- the Woods and some Swiss/DT 240s freehub with TK 7.1 rims. I'm thinking a Rob Roy frame can handle either wheel, will help me get my weight further forward and give me the option of drop bars. I have enough parts lying around to do this if I turn the monkey back to a street cruiser with 700 x 60 slicks or dirt cruiser with knobbies.
BTW, middle-age refers to me, not the bike.
