Anybody else doing two rides in one day?

I am currently in-between my two seasonal jobs right now, so I haven't been really pressed for time. Since last week I have been doing two rides a day, instead of just one longer ride. Snow is still covering the path in spots so this has prevented me from going as far as I would like. I usually do a 40 mile ride, come home and eat lunch, then go for a 20-25 mile spin either before or after dinner. I feel like I have been improving drastically by doing two-a-days since I can go at a harder pace for the second ride. I know pro football players do two-a-days to get in shape early season, just seeing if anybody else is having similar success.

Because of the shift I worked I was able to do that over the winter. Seemed like two 25-40 mile rides in one day gave better results than grinding 65 at one time.

I was doing it this winter on the trainer ... 1 hour before work, 2 hours after work. Overall, it seemed to work fairly well and I was able to get the mileage in I wanted. I could even split it into one spin and one interval session if I wanted a harder day on the bike with good total "On the bike" time.

When I commute both ways is 21x2... I don't ride 40+ consistently enough to know if 21x2 is better than 42x1.
