    Determining bottom bracket spindle size

Im switching out my octalink bottom bracket with a square taper to accommodate a new compact crank. I took off the cranks measure the spindle and it is only 94mm end to end. Is there a square taper equivalent? How do i determine proper spindle length otherwise? Any help appreciated!

You buy/spec the bottom bracket to fit the crankset. Retail cranks will state the intended chainline and desired taper and spindle length...generally you'll want JIS taper (unless Campag or something vintage)...but spindle length varies with brand and tier and spec of crank from year to year even within the same OEM.

Said another way...the spindle length of an octalink crank has zero bearing on your sq-taper purchase.

You might need a 102mm spindle or a 122mm spindle or anything in between, and it might need to be symmetric or asymmetric depending on the sq taper crank you buy.

And you should be posting obviously component based questions in the proper forum section.
