If I was unsure of getting a fixie, this convinced me:

Non-hipster fixie usage. Rated PG for naughty words and riding without helmet:

Several years ago, I predicted that fixies would lose their appeal once a lot of middle-age white guys in the suburbs started riding them. Maybe there's hope if the transition from urban hipster to ghetto gansta takes hold.

On a related note, I just received the Bicycling Buyer Guide for 2013. Not a single fixie in the entire issue. Their so-called "urban" bikes are all cruisers. And there's no longer any such thing as just a "road bike". They have the following sub-categories:
    Carbon Race
    Aero Road
    Carbon Classic
    Women's Classic
    Enthusiast Carbon
    Titanium
    Women's Road
    Recreational Carbon Road
    Road Disc
    Aluminum Race
    Entry-level Carbon
    Entry-level Aluminum
    Cyclocross
    Flat-bar Road
    Insert something clever here:

Insert list of every bike I own here:

I'm a middle-aged white guy in the suburbs who's been riding fixies since before they had any appeal. I'm glad more people ride them now, if for no other reason than the fact that parts are more widely available. Whether those people call themselves -- or are called by others -- hipsters or ganstas or whatever, and why they choose to ride FG, matters not to me one way or the other.

Wow, all those subcategories, and no steel. I guess my road bike isn't a road bike any more.

    good point.
it can't be dinied that fixies are fun and snappy, it just adds a bit of edge to cycling without it being competetive, doesn't matter if its a style or not, they're simpler, easier to fix and don't malfunction as much.
    enjoy it

Just the opposite, IMO. They haven't been popular because they carried the stigma of being hipster fashion statement (height of irony!). Now that that's broken, I can easily see myself conveyin' my badass self down the road on one.

Uh, middle aged white guys are the original hipsters. Well, those on the older side of middle age who have pictures of their skinny somethings in bell bottoms.

i guess i always thought of real fixies as custom builds, which, by definition would preclude the notion of a "best fixie" category by a mass market cycling publication. (and yes i am aware that one can buy fixies all over the web and in cycling stores. still...

Well, I resemble that remark. I threw away those pictures, but I was being a bit imprecise when I called myself "middle-aged." I'm not sure to what extent hipsters are the spiritual descendants of the hippies, but everybody's welcome on the bus, as far as I'm concerned.

    I miss my ponytail sometimes.

Lost me at ngr and rap.
Two of our strongest riders will show up at group rides on their fixies.
They will put us all in place by riding 50 miles with us up and down hills.
I wish I could do what they do.
