Got to work this morning and discovered I had put my wifes jeans in my locker.
Oh well, It will be a work in tights day. Kind of like wearing "jammies" to work.
It always takes 5 or 6 trips to work to get all the bugs worked out.
I bring clothes with me in a backpack, but I also leave the previous day's clothes in my desk (so when I go home, I put yesterday's clothes in my backpack, and put today's clothes in my desk). This way if I forget something, I can wear the one from the previous day.
I would've had to return home and get some clothes
At least you can get away with wearing tights in your workplace. I always leave business clothes in my office. Managing the clothes -- getting them cleaned, bringing in new shirts, pants, etc. -- can be a pain in the a** though. But it's worth it to be able to get in some riding before and after sitting virtually all of my work day. My worst error in all my years of commuting has been not having underwear. In which case, I went without it!
I'm one who never gets the program entirely down. On any given day I can forget most anything. To guard against my most frequent screw-ups, I leave a lock, a towel and loafers (so no-sox can look intentional) at the office and carry clothes most days. A pair of pants and a shirt in my desk drawer are starting to seem like a good idea. Though I've yet to forget or bring my wife's clothes, I have been sprayed by a car going through a mud puddle while doing lunch time errands on the bike.
Rode to work and realized I left my glasses at home. I'm pretty much blind as a bat without them so I had to wear my Rx sunglasses at work all day (and get subjected to non-stop jokes for my forgetfulness)...
Steve-O (has often gone commando due to poor commuter packing)
I once got to work without undies or a belt. Having khaki pants that day, and a meeting, I needed both. So I went to the nearby store to get them and the nice young woman clerk said "Ahh, stocking up on accessories today." I spared her the detail that I was at that moment commando and would be putting on those accessories as soon as I got back to my building.
I'm lucky enough to have a full size locker (and showers) at work. After forgetting my pants one day (and needing to borrow a colleague's car to retrieve them), I now keep a complete backup set of clothes in said locker. In fact, I generally have several sets of clothes in there and will often wear a single dress-shirt a number of times before taking it home to launder. Same goes for pants. So all I really need to pack is clean soxs/t-shirts/boxers, and they can be stuffed in jersey pockets if need be.
Also, truth be told, I don't ride both ways 5 days a week. There is always some driving and that makes rotating clothes easy if I do several days worth at once.
I guess I've been lucky to not have forgotten anything. My morning ritual, whether driving or riding, is to lay out what I'm wearing that day, and either pack it in the backpack or lay it on the bed prior to showering.
Worse than forgeting something is being splashed by a car and realizing only when arriving at work that all of your clothes are now saturated with puddle water. Ride home 20 miles or bathroom sink clean-up. Short straw either way.
Fortunately I've also avoided this scenario by my backpack having a waterproof lining. I discovered this on a ride home in the pouring rain, got home and unpacked everything. The only stuff wet was in an outer pocket.
