What is your favorite base layer

Went for a ride yesterday in the high 50's damp weather and was too cold.
Had on a Craft zero sleeveless baselayer, armwarmers, S/S jersey, PI aero vest, leg warmers. Ended up putting newspaper under my arm warmers and jersey. Considering a Craft Active Extreme L/S Base Layer. I don't think i need the windstopper version since I have already have vests and jackets with Windstopper, just looking for warmth without too much sweat.
Last year bought a Underarmour L/S base layer but I don't like it, doesn't seem to wick very well and retains moisture. The Craft zero is ok for mid 60's but doesn't help much in 40's and 50's

I like Craft L/S Pro Zero Extreme. In the 40s I usually just were my Craft base layer and my Castelli Expresso Due jacket and am quite warm. Starts out just a little chilly than plenty comfortable. In the 30s I add a micro fleese mid layer with the above set up. I also have the Craft base layer with wind stopper front that ill use depending on wind & temperature.

High 50s is cold? Pft. The local forecast high temperature tomorrow is 32 Fahrenheit.

I usually just double up on jerseys. Two jerseys, arm warmers, leg warmers, wool socks, light ski gloves, and a hat, sometimes a windbreaker vest, and I'm good down to the lower 20s or so. Keep your extremities warm, and your core will stay warm with less insulation. You can also go the other way. Keep your core warm, and you can keep your extremities warm with less insulation.
Man up, dumb down, and do one gear.

I guess cold is relative. In the mid-60s, not only don't I have a base layer, I'm probably riding with my jersey half unzipped (or fully unzipped if it's a pullover) after 10 miles or so.

Mid-50s, polypro base layer and regular jersey does it. Below 50/low 50s, it's a long sleeved thermal jersey, or if it's windy, a breathable jacket over the base layer. 50 is about the point where I switch over to full fingered gloves, too. Might add a polypro skull cap, too. I can always take it off and stuff it into my jacket pocket if it's too much.

I'd say that the time I wear both a thermal jersey and a jacket over the base layer begins in the low to mid 40s, and ends at about freezing temp.

Down into the 20s, it's a base layer (heavier polypro maybe), a microfleece mid-layer, and jacket.

Once it's below 20, I either ride the stationary bike, or I ride the cruiser with ski pants and a ski jacket, with a balaclava and ski goggles. Coldest ride last winter was 16F.

High 50s? I'll probably start out with arm warmers, but those would come off once I get moving and get my temps up.

High 50's isn't cold, but my upper body hates the cold but my legs don't seem to care as much. Base layers depends on temps. So to provide you a little help in choosing what to wear I found this to be somewhat helpful, the only thing I've ever found helpful on Bicycling! see: What Cycling Clothes to Wear Bike Riding | Bicycling Magazine

Race, by Greenaero. RACE base layer | Green Aero LLC | U.S. Distributers of RACE and NextZeroWind technical clothing from Italy

And base layers by Arc-Terex, and Adidas Terex. But I am getting tired of these guys using my name.

If it's sunny, I'll go bare arms and legs in the high 50's. It's a little chilly when you start out, but you warm up, unless you are just doing a recovery ride. I'll probably throw on a mesh Castelli T-shirt under my jersey.
In the high 40's, i'll go with thin knee and arm warmers, and maybe an old SS wool jersey. If it's overcast, I'll throw on a wind vest.
In the high 30's, it'll be heavier knee and arm warmers, along with a long sleeve polypro, and the old wool jersey and wind vest.
    From 25 to 35, I'll wear tights and a thermal jacket, unless it's a race....Then i'll dress like the high 40's.

What is your favorite base layer

I like the compression of my UA Coldgear but I do think it retains too much water keeping the cool in when the wind picks up.

Icebreaker Merino wool. I use the 200 for temps down to the low 40s and the 260 when it gets colder. Mid 50s I don't even wear a base layer, just a jersey and windbreaker jacket.

The problem is my rides are 4mi up then 4mi down at 8% average. You get hot uphill and then coooold downhill, especially when it is in mid 50s and lower. I use assos climarange baselayers - they dry out super fast, which is important to me.

Ended up getting a Craft Keep Warm L/S base layer.
    Feels really good on.
Will try it under my Gore Phantom jacket tomorrow.
I live in SoCal so used to warmer temps, anything below 60 feels freezing to me and 40s is almost too cold to ride in.
Under Armour went on Ebay hated that thing.
