17-year-old Sells Kidney for an iPad2

Really disturbing. And not likely to be a future Apple commercial.

According to Global Times, a youngster in China's Anhui province wanted a new iPad 2 tablet so badly he was willing to part with a kidney to be able to afford it.

The student, a 17-year-old high school student named Zheng, told a local newspaper "I wanted to buy an iPad 2 but could not afford it. A broker contacted me on the Internet and said he could help me sell one kidney for 20,000 yuan." The "broker" was true to his word, and after the operation was completed on April 28, Zheng received his 20,000 yuan, which equates to a little over $3,000.

The young organ donor carried out these plans without the knowledge of his mother, who was surprised to see her son awash in new, expensive electronics

    It's his kidney, why not?
Whenever the legislators endeavour to take away and destroy the property of the people, or to reduce them to slavery under arbitrary power, they put themselves into a state of war with the people who are thereupon absolved from any further obedience, and are left to the common refuge which God hath provided for all men against force and violence - John Locke

He's not 18 yet Andy. Should've got a parental signature.

I think over on 9to5mac or Engadget they were reporting the hospital where the operation was done isn't even equipped for transplants and the kid is now suffering pretty badly.

Seems to me like this is one (of many) unfortunate result of severe and rapid cultural/socio-economic change.

@Andy: IMO the sale of body parts walks a very fine line.

I don't see the problem, it's not like he doesn't have a backup.

Well he doesn't have a backup now!

I'd sell my kidney if I had to. It'd have to be really rather desperate, like if I needed the money for a relatives life saving op or something. (unless the op was a kidney transplant! Doh!)

How desperately did he need an iPad? Jeez?

And what happens if he just as badly needs the iPad 3 next year?

As one yahoo commenter said, "He should sell his brain too, because he's clearly not using it."

There's another question that comes to mind: Would a 17yo kid sell his kidney to fund the starting of a racing team?

    Only teasing CVR.
