"Bound for Glory: America in Color"

Color images from the late '30s/early '40s.

    Holy Wow.

    that was AWESOME.

    thanks for sharing that.
Whenever the legislators endeavour to take away and destroy the property of the people, or to reduce them to slavery under arbitrary power, they put themselves into a state of war with the people who are thereupon absolved from any further obedience, and are left to the common refuge which God hath provided for all men against force and violence - John Locke

Outstanding photos. That photo of the women on lunch break could be Van Gogh's Potato Eaters.
Mapie is a conventional looking former Hollywood bon viveur, now leading a quiet life in a house made of wood by an isolated beach. He has cultivated a taste for culture, and is a celebrated raconteur amongst his local associates, who are artists, actors, and other leftfield/eccentric types. I imagine he has a telescope, and an unusual sculpture outside his front door. He is also a beach comber. The Rydster.

Wow, I need to bookmark that and look a little closer.

Our modern digital ultra expensive cameras take better pictures in what way? There is something about the color of old film that just glows.

Striking -- you know what stands out most to me? Not one single obese kid or adult.... not even any overweight people (except for that guy in the background of picture 12). I know that the depression left its marks but jeez, has all the extra calorie-packing since then realy translated into happier, healthier people?

    Just my 2 cents....

The school lunch program was started in the USA when the draft in WWII was turning up a bunch of young men who were malnourished.

I'm going to have to take those a few at a time, they deserve a good study.

Very interesting photo series. They ought to have subtitled it "Why OSHA was created."

    Interesting. Didn't know that.

Other thing is that the subjects of the photos were poor, and this was -- I'm assuming -- before McD's, Big Gulps, Doritos, HFCS, etc.

There was a tub of corn syrup on one of those dining table pictures. That's maybe not the boogeyman that the big gulps and doritos are.

But I think it was still before the time that it was produced en masse and used prodigiously in cheap food.

Yep, as a kid I remember my father buying corn syrup for pancakes because it (and he) was cheap.
