Computer geek help: Google maps and IE
Need Geek help!
I have my work lappy here. When I look at a map on Google Maps, some of the graphics simply don't show up. For example, the zoom bar on the left only shows a small empty white box where the zoom in and zoom out buttons are, and a cross of 5 white boxes above the zoom in button/box. When I scroll over them, it tells me they are the Pan buttons, and they work, as do the zoom in/out buttons. But I don't see the slider scale between the zoom in/out buttons. For a long time, this has just been a monir annoyance, but I tried to look at some routes on MapMyRide.com, and the markers and routes don't show up. I just get a basic map.
What do I need to do to get it working correctly? I'm bumb enough to not even know how to check what version of Java I have (can't find Java in my list of programs).
Hep me, hep me!

I don't know how to solve your problem, but I'm pretty sure Java is not involved.

Helps like a hole in the head. thanks for that. Have a corgi day.
Let me reiterate: "my work lappy here". Corporate giants frown upon loading new apps on their machines that are hooked up to the corporate networks.

It's not like it's an "unknown" application. Firefox is quickly becoming a preferred browser, but I'm sorry that my advice didn't help. I don't have any other suggestions besides reinstalling the newest IE and downloading the latest Java applet.

Then you're kind of limited in what you can do to troubleshoot. At the very least, I would delete all of your temporary internet files.

JTB, have you cleared out your cache/cookies/files?
When IE starts acting funky, do the following:
With IE open, go to the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
Then click on Delete Cookies, Delete Files and Clear History, clicking on OK when it asks.
To find out your version of Java, click on the Tools menu again, select Sun Java Console. Check the top of the page when it opens, it should say something like:
Java(TM) Plug-in: Version 1.4.2_13
Using JRE version 1.4.2_13 Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM
Hope it helps.
Oh, and don't download IE 7. It's a nightmare.

Thanks murbike. It seems I'm running 1.5.0_13
I doubt it's cookies. It's always done this. Since day one. Another totally odd thing it does, is on my personal web page, none of the pictures show up. Every other computer I've used to show someone or view my web page (it's a comcast.net account), it works just fine, and I've never had any other web page come up with blank space like that.
I looked through all my internet settings a dozen times, and can't figure out WTF is up.
Those are the only 2 issues I have run across.
Von - I could probably ask my IT department if they care. I'm assuming it's free and can be downloaded. Might be worth a shot.

Well, it was worth the shot.
Blame it on IT...maybe they have some funky settings on the image....
