Checked out a place near us, randomly, just to get a sense of what's out there. It's a private-pay home, very nice, not "fancy" but comfortable with lots of support, entry-level apartment $4900/month, plus one month deposit, not including certain things......

It's unreal how much a marginally-decent retirement costs.

I looked into Sunrise for my mother. Nice facility, but everything was either tiered or a la carte.

Visited my mother today at rehab. She's not pleased that I checked out a place, but then nothing pleases her! Explained that she might not be capable of independent living anymore, but we'll see how she does with a full-time aide.

She keeps repeating herself which might be due to the mini-strokes. And she just called me a few minutes ago, asking where the clean clothes are that I just washed for her- "for the tenth time, I dropped them off for labeling, you'll get them by tomorrow." Then she gets defensive and insists that I did NOT tell her that......

It's very frustrating when you can't make somebody happy, and can't pinpoint the causes of the problems (she lost 30lbs since the last surgery but she's eating well, it seems.) There's a meeting next week with some of her aides/docs.

    Christine,

Has she had blood work done? My wife took her mom in and had lost like 20lbs in a few months time. Through the tests they diagnosed blood loss. On to the gastroenterologist this week.

She seems to have a large collection of specialists, but no diagnosis. We have a meeting on Thursday with some of the rehab people to discuss her case, I'll ask about the bloodwork. Thanks for the tip!
