First PSA Test Today
My father died from prostate cancer so Iíve known for a long time that Iím in a higher risk group. Today, at age 41, Iím scheduled to have my first PSA test as part of my annual physical.
I know that most men get the test regardless of their family history. I guess it just brings the reality of everything home to have reached this milestone.
My biggest concern is the information that has come out about false positives and men being encouraged to take pretty drastic action based on the results of these tests. I know this was brought up in a similar thread a while ago. Now that Iím actually going to get a number attached to my name, itís a bit intimidating!
I know there are many of us in this boat. I would appreciate any feedback from those who have gotten the test year after year starting around my age. Assuming good health, has your PSA level stayed pretty much level during your forties?

First, good job on getting the test.
Second, recognize that the test is what it is; a diagnostic tool. And as such, it does have its limitations. It ain't perfect. But it is a good/decent tripwire to tell your doc when to deploy other tests.
Third, your number will vary over time. Roll with it. Mine fluctuates with arthritis flares, interestingly enough. Or with other health issues that stress my immune system. Riding a bike doesn't affect my numbers.
Fourth, you ain't lived until you have had a Transrectal Prostate Biopsy. Now THERE'S a test. You can do a few searches here in the Lounge...
