Going to Maui - where to stay in Hana?

One of the perks Wifey's job is that they have a condo on Maui that employees can use for free. So we're going there in a few weeks. The condo is on the west side of the island in Lahiana. We want to spend one night one the east side in Hana. Searching the 'net for accomadations is wearing my patience so I asketh the Lounge - "has anyone stayed in Hana at a place the recommend"?

We want to keep it at $300 or less and the Travaasa is OUT.

I've camped at Wainapanapa and also at the part of Haleakala NP that comes down to the coast. Seriously, there ain't much in Hana. I don't get the road or the place's appeal. I'd rather stay at someplace like the Grand Wailea if I wanted a change of scenery.

Thanks for the tip. There are hikes and things we want to see/do along the way there and don't want to drive all the way back to our condo at the end of the day. I'll look into other places on that side of the island.

I considered Travaasa as a surprise to my wife but we wouldn't be spending enough time there to justify the price tag.

When I was living in HI in the early 90's, the remoteness and isolation was part of the appeal.

There is so much to do on the drive that I regret not staying overnight to take advantage of the extra day. No help on places to stay but grab a coffee at Anthony's in Paia before you head out. Enjoy.

There aren't many serious traffic jams on Maui, so vacationers need to have some way to get their "frazzled driving" fix in while on vacation. Otherwise, they might relax and enjoy themselves or somesuch. j/k. Sort of.

Protip: rent the smallest car you possibly can.

Protip 2: Don't rent a convertible. Think sudden downpour.
It's all fun and games until someone ends up in a cone.
