I have a crack in my gutter...

that drips onto the middle of our front porch steps when it rains (and its been raining a lot)...
should I hire a professional or just spend the $1.55 on roofing cement and do it myself?

Install a new gutter right below the old, cracked gutter.

Fix it yourself. If the roofing cement doesn't work you can always try to trim a piece of flashing and install it inside the gutter to cover the cracked area.

I'm having my duel chimney pointed-up right now, replacing the two single flue
caps with one bigger one, and a entirely new roof system installed next Tuesday.

    ^^^^^^
THIS all should make you feel better now.

Put a water diverter above the leaking part . . . . . then hire someone to buy the cement
for you at the store then, do it yourself. HTH.

    +1 on what NUTT said.

I first read that as "I have a crack in my GUITAR" and started to get choked up . . . glad it's just your gutter.

+2 on NUTT's comment, unless you have a problem with ladders.

Could be worse, you could have a gutter in your crack!
all kidding aside, I have the same problem, only I caused the crack when chipping away at ice this winter.

Quick and temporary fix is to use some roofing cement or epoxy in a piece of flashing. Right fix is to replace the gutter, it's not hard.

The r.g. thing is awesome, and worthy of consideration.

There is actual gutter sealant which is a commercially available product intended for your problem.

Clean the inside of the gutter with something appropriate, scuff sand it, and apply the gutter goo.

It should go without saying that you should have a dry gutter prior to working and for a time afterward for the goo to properly cure.

It should further go without saying that you should be careful.

Wait, you're a sea kayaker and don't know about gutter repair tape? Self-adhesive aluminum flashing that sticks (really well) to surfaces that are already wet. This stuff to duct tape is like Chuck Norris compared to Richard Simmons. Thirty seconds later, bask in the glory of a completed project.

A couple of feet of this stuff ride with me in the boat as part of an emergency repair kit. Home Depot, etc will have it.
