I have a Visa gift card that expires soon

I've been saving this card for home repairs or appliances or something, but nothing has come up this year, and now I just want to turn it into some extra cash to put in my savings account in my bank before it expires. How can I do this?

Can you Paypal yourself? They'll take 3% right? The card is worth 300 dollars, so I guess it might be worth it.

Use it to pay for groceries and other bills? They you can divert those funds.

Or fritter it away on booze and bike parts.

I was so close to buying a set of Elixir CRs for my mountain bike. But I'm going on a road trip to Pisgah soon and I still have a hospital bill to pay so it's prudent to just save it

I may just use it to pay for fuel and expenses on my Pisgah trip. The card is good till December and I'm leaving in two weeks so maybe I'll just use that.

That works. A case or more of wine, some top shelf special occasion booze... iow things you would normally not buy, but are nice to have on hand for the next year or so. Or mail order some stupid food, like truffles or live lobster. A new bike part, just for fashion reasons. New tires to try. Leather bar tape.

But really, if cash is the goal, I would just use it for necessities like food and gas, leaving me $300 more in the bank at the end of the month.

Put it on eBay, with a Buy It Now price of $329. Someone will take it off your hands.

Seriously, Coolhand has the right idea, although I semi-object to his use of the word "fritter" with respect to booze. I recently had a $150 Visa rebate card, the bulk of which financed two especially satisfying trips to the state store. As long as a card doesn't have to be redeemed at a particular store, it's just like cash but in a different form.

    Expire?

    Read the fine print.

I am no lawyer but am relatively certain they only try to scare you with this stuff - I THINK, I THINK, that some FTCFDICSFJHSADFKJDHKJDH government rule prevents the balance from just vanishing.

There should be a phone number on the card -- call it.

One I had recently was this "Well, the *CARD* expires, but the balance in the account, does not. If your card expires and you need a replacement, it'll be $4.95."

I managed to use the card before that, but, this fee, while annoying, may be cheaper than what paypal will charge you.

If that won't work, and you can't paypal yourself, I'll exchange with you. If we book it as a "personal payment" it might not even charge, depends upon the account time and when the last time they changed their TOS, which is every dang week.

Surprised it took so long for the suggestion of H+B, Corgi puppies, or booze!

'gent I will keep that in mind. There are so many cool items for 300 bucks. This has been a tempting week, with computer monitors, televisions, bike parts, and other sales popping up. If I *do* spend it on something I don't really need, I want it to be spent on something that will last me a long time. Something more tangible than a lifetime pass to Brazzers or a pallet of cheap beer, anyway.

There is money earmarked for the hospital bill already, this card was earmarked for home improvement or other "not so fun" expenditures. It's just tempting as hell to not spend it on a sweet new set of disc brakes or something
