I tried beet juice in my bike bottle tonight

Tastes like dirt. Didn't make me go any faster.

You're doing it all wrong. If you want to go faster, tape a steak to your leg and ride by these guys.

It'd probably make me go faster, but it'd only be because I'd hate the horrible aftertaste in my mouth and want to get home as quickly as possible.

And that is exactly why I don't like beets, in any form. Bleah.

You have to ingest about 500ml of beet juice at least 2+ hours prior to the exercise bout.

Basically the nitrate has to be reduced to nitrite and NO. This process uses the bacteria in the mouth (so mouth wash can reduce the effictiveness of the NO conversion).

The dietary nitrate concentration (and thus NO in the body) can be additive over days as well. The upper limit is not yet know.

We have a study happening this summer!

Sooo... what exactly are the beets supposed to do for you? (Exercise-wise, I mean)

I like beets. Never drank beet juice on a ride though.

Will it be as awesome as pickle juice in my bidons?

Under no circumstances am I ever going to take half a liter of this stuff and swish it around in my mouth for 2 hours. Besides, it's expensive because I'm too lazy to use a juicer so I just buy it.

Beetit.com. 70mL shots Beet It - Order Beet It shots online for Canada and USBeet It

the company does a decent job of summarizing the data:

Beets, the natural superfoodBeet It *(vascular widening......AKA vasodilation)

Basic gist....NO is a vasodilator and lowers the oxygen cost of exercise.

It appears to be erogogenic in non-elite athletes for high intensity exercise lasting more than 5 minutes but less than 40 minutes. The data for longer and shorter is mixed. Elites have not been shown to benefit clinical (for the most part).

In our study, we will be using a field test (5k and 10k running event) in a randomized cross over design using many differing fitness levels (ideally from near elite to 30 min 5k and 60 min 10k runners).

My personal n=1's have shown positive results. My experience is that I feel like my Ve (breathing) is slightly less during a long tempo ride and RPE is a bit lower for threshold reps. But I didn't notice a difference on race day....

I will 'play' a bit this summer with the met cart and some students are playing right now with beet-it shots on randomized, double-blinded, mile run in a lab environment using the met cart and time to complete as outcome measures.

Interesting, so it is beet root, not beets. May have to try some. I like beets but beet root does not sound nearly as appealing.
