LA Peeps - Best route from NW side of city to Irvine?

I might be heading down to Irvine from the SF Bay Area later this week.
But LA traffic is epically awful, n'est-ce pas?

I know I take I-5 'til I'm near San Bernardino Fernando or thereabouts. But, what's the least awful route after that?

The Middle Route - Nut up and just stay on I-5. Right down the middle.

The Southern Route - Take the 405, yo.

The Northern Route - Sneak along the northern perimeter via 210, and then trickle on down south via 57 and 55.
What's best? And how long does rush hour really go for?

Oh, and are the wildfires still shutting down some freeways? If so, just how fuxxored is it?

    Thanks for any 411.

I'd just bite the bullet and stay on the 5. Rush hour? Traffics probably bad from around 3 - 8. What day are you doing this?

During the 4 years that I lived there, it's hard to predict how the traffic is going to be and where the traffic "Sigalerts" are going to be. I would just use Waze and have it direct the best way.

Ah, LA, where people showing up an hour early or two hours late is expected due to traffic!

"Best" requires knowing your value hierarchy. Avoiding traffic seems to be your goal. My knowledge is way out of date, but I used to make these kinds of choices all the time when I lived there.

As a general rule, avoid the 405. As a general rule, city center is the target of a lot of traffic at rush hours (pretty much before 10 and after 2) and lots of through traffic and just general traffic all the time. So that leaves the round about route.

Timing wise, you have a decent shot at a relatively smooth flow on the 405 mid day. Aim for a 10-2 passing and you might be clear. This would be my choice, but then I lived near the 10/405 intersection and wouldn't have to HTFU

    Good luck.

Your route depends on the time of day you travel thru. And use Waze, as one poster recommended. From my experience, the "long" loop along the 210 to the 605 or 57 makes the most sense. Plus, if you drive with a passenger or green-stickered plug-in, it will get you tons of free HOV lanes. You will avoid the most aggravation by hitting Santa Clarita (Magic Mountain) close to noon. Reach that point by 3 and all bets are off; better to stop in Pasadena for an early dinner and walk the streets of Old Town. By the way, expect equally nasty rush hour traffic around Irvine.

Haven't been in the area since early 90's. Friday PM taking the 405 from the SF valley/101 to OC was not fun. From Oxnard I would sometimes use the 118 and 210 but that more when heading east. I've also taken the 5 and that's no dream either. Interesting to hear how it worked out.

Some stuff came up... I'm not going 'til tomorrow.

We'll see if LA really lives up to its rep as 'worst traffic in the nation'.

As others have said check the traffic. First choice would be 5 to 134 to 210 to 57 to Irvine. Second is the 5 (particularly if you have a 2nd passenger or the greenie eco sticker). Avoid the 405 ... mind-numbing traffic. KPPC (89.3 FM) during the daylight hours is a nice diversion to help keep your mind off the dismal traffic.
I am 100% convinced the internet and social media are not the salvation to human civility.

I found SF, downtown, to be way more stressful than the freeways in LA.

LA traffic flows well. Until it doesn't. Just be ready for a 2 hour delay, and if it doesn't happen, you will feel very lucky indeed.

It depends on what time of day you are traveling. Google maps will give you some good routes with fairly accurate time estimates.

You'd probably have the best luck taking the 210 to the 57 then down to Irvine from there or cutting over to the 71, since that keeps you away from the 405 and away from Downtown. But it will still get pretty bad once you get to Pasadena or just past it.

Others have said Waze, and for beating traffic that's usually the best bet. Just don't let it take you on and off the freeways.

Very cool... will put that into use.

So far, it's not so bad down here, but I managed to come in at a really good time. I did I-5 all the way, and while I was a bit shocked at its condition in places (VERY narrow lanes, lots of torn-up asphalt that really needs to be replaced), the traffic in the late evening wasn't really any worse than Hwy 101 traffic on the Bay Area peninsula at the same time of day.

But, I'm here a few more days, so there's still time for Infamous LA Traffic™ to bite me in da azz.

LAers, any must-see sights down here, beyond the usual tourist traps?

I know LACMA's supposed to be cool, and there are some good comedy clubs like UCB (Upright Citizen's Brigade). Anything else?
