Listening to the new Green Day album.

Random thoughts on it brought to you by...

So I'm on track 5 of the first listen, and I feel like I'm listening to an amped up sequel to American Idiot It's been a while since I've listened to AI, but It used to be on pretty heavy rotation with the 5 hour drives to school and back. I don't know where I'm going with this.

(That beer up there.... good stuff.)

But yeah.... This was supposed to be a post about the new Green Day Album. If the intention was to release a follow up of American Idiot, and market it as the second part, It works for me. At least its the impression I'm getting so far.

Horseshoes and Handgrenades..... I don't want to say I didn't like the song, but well.... Saying its Meh..? would be giving it a compliment.

Definitly some parts in the album that I really like, but i'm not sold on it as a whole yet.

Still feels like Amarican Idiot part 2.

I liked American Idiot. I'll have to see if the offspring has downloaded this album yet and give it a listen.
    Move along...nothing to see here.

    Interesting...

Compare contrast U2s previous with U2s new...

    and then

    Greenday's previous with Greenday's new...

I get the same impression with both. Ok, but not mind blowing.
    so sayeth the funk....

It uses the same type of narrative devices for sure. In this instance we have Christian, a boy who wants to nuke the world vs Gloria who wants to save it. Horseshoes and Handgrenades is Christian's rant. I think the album works as a whole, but not so much as individual songs. I miss albums like this as most are written to be marketed as inividual songs these days. Ipods killed the concept album.

look at the lyrics in that context...
    ----------------------------------------

    I'm not ****ing around

    I think I'm coming out
    All the deceivers and cheaters
I've think we've got a bleeder right now
Want you to slap me around
Want you to knock me out
    Well,you missed me kissed me
Now you better kick me down

    Maybe you're the runner up
But the first one to lose the race
    Almost only really counts in
    Horseshoes and hand grenades

I'm gonna burn it all down
    I'm gonna rip it out
    Well,everything that you employ
Was meant for me to destroy
    To the ground now
So don't you **** me around
    Because I'll shoot you down
    I'm gonna drink,fight and ****
    And pushing my luck
    All the time now

    Maybe you're the runner up
But the first one to lose the race
    Almost only really counts in
    Horseshoes and hand grenades

    Demolition,self-destruction
    What to annihilate
    The age-old contradiction
    Demolition,self-destruction
    What to annihilate
    The old age

    I'm not ****ing around
    I think I'm coming out
    All the deceivers and cheaters
I've think we've got a bleeder right now
    I'm not ****ing around

I really need to listen more carefully to the lyrics. I have no idea what the idea/ story to the album is, so maybe that, and not being drunk, will make me appreciate it more.

I guess I'm just a sucker for any group that bothers to make a concept album anymore when the market for it is probably not all that big. Singles seem to drive the industry anymore. The simple pleasure of sitting around listening to entire albums has gone the way of the dinosaur for most.

You're right, but I think that some genres have resisted the trend and still lend themselves to full-album listening. Singer/songwriter albums are still generally unified wholes. I just DLed Steve Earle's newest, "Townes" the other day, which is a good example. The same could be said of jazz. - the unified album has always been a feature of jazz, mostly because different combinations of performers tend to develop unique sounds because of the collaborative nature of the music. I would like to see more concept albums, though.

    Greenday's latest effort?

Meh. At first listen, every track sounded the same. Haven't tried for a second helping yet.

I've only heard "Know your enemy" so far but like the tune.

Fun to play on guitar (B,E,A,F#, corrections welcomed!)
