Madison, WI--Shops & What to Do

I'm going to be in Madison, WI next week. I have a "free" day. I'll be staying near the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center. I won't have a car but could cab it or bus it.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good shop or two to visit (I live in a nearly shop free area)?

Any suggestions for things to do--food, bars, book stores, museums, etc.?

    Thanks.

State street, just across the square, has all the oddball shops, etc that you could want. Also has the Yellow Jersey, cluttered shrine of a bike shop dealing all sorts of vintage porn. Vets museum is down there as well, tour the capital etc.

Could also easily grab a B-cycle for the day and go anywhere in town you desire. Campus, zoo, etc.

Machinery Row is close to the terrace, williamson bike west is close. Shouldn't be hard to kill a day.

It's been 15+ years since I left but if the Great Dane is still open they've got killer food and beer
Whenever the legislators endeavour to take away and destroy the property of the people, or to reduce them to slavery under arbitrary power, they put themselves into a state of war with the people who are thereupon absolved from any further obedience, and are left to the common refuge which God hath provided for all men against force and violence - John Locke

    And several others.

Great. Dane is indeed there and Rutebaga is arguably one of the best paddle sport shops in the country.

Dear n00bs: This is how you earn rep. The end.

If you're in Madison on a Saturday morning, head to the capitol square and check out one if the best farmer's markets in the country. For realz. Br/Lunch at The Old Fashioned or Graze, right on the square. If you end up at Graze, get a bloody mary.

Go to Waterloo instead to see if they make good bikes there.
Man up, dumb down, and do one gear.

September in southern WI is a wonderful thing. My suggestion, all of which can be done on foot in 2 or 3 hours:

Walk up to the Capitol Square. The WI Capitol is one of the most picturesque in the nation. Walk around the Square, go inside and enjoy the rotunda.

Walk down State Street. More shops and restaurants than you can shake a stick at. Not as indie as it used to be, but still a fun experience.

Walk up Bascom Hill. Observe the student wildlife gaining knowledge.

Stroll over to Memorial Union Terrace. Have a union member buy a beer for you while you gaze out over Lake Mendota.

PS - if you like Turkish food, Husnu's on State Street is very tasty.
