    mail merge misery

Address list has been updated and cards are ready to go.

Mail-merged and tested printing directly onto envelopes- not working. Fine, labels it is.

One box of labels isn't listed as an option. So I dig around and find another box that IS an option......but Merge doesn't seem to notice that Avery 5160 has 3 columns, not four

If I had been hand-writing, this probably would be at least half done by now.

So what do you kids/experts/smart people do for bulk mailing these days?? Thought this would be easier. Have used Merge for wedding invites, somehow that worked fine.

I usually spend about 10 minutes custom setting the measurements, running a blank regular piece of paper thru to test it.

Tried custom-setting but measuring the margins was driving me insane. Two units short of 1/2 an inch, for example.....grrrr!! Then it wouldn't save the custom settings even after I measured and plugged them in.

Finally got it to work, although less than perfectly: Two of the sheets have only three addresses printed on them. At least they're all well-situated on each label, woo hoo. Wasted two sheets as the top margin was slightly off, adjusted that, which is how it's almost working now.

But wtf?? Whatever happened to streamlining things? What happened that I can't just mail merge/print anymore?

We use the Avery Wizard a lot at work.

Avery had the brilliant idea to change label numbers, but not update the Avery Wizard to include the new numbers. You'll have to search for your labels by dimensions. It's in there.

But what's funny is even with their Wizard for the exact label and label number, I still had to write a macro to adjust margins and layout to get the thing to print correctly.

Yeah, yeah, I know, me and my fat capitalist American a$$ problems. It's also why there's more stress and depression among our people than, for example, those living off the grid in the South Pacific. They don't have to live by arbitrary rules dictated by a consumer society.
