"Nelly" Busted With A Loaded .45 and 36 Bags of Heroin in Sierra Blanca Last Night
rapper Nelly's tour bus was pulled over in the West Texas town of Sierra Blanca last night, the same checkpoint town Fiona Apple, Willie Nelson and Snoop Dogg were pulled over in. Only this time, besides weed, Nelly had a loaded .45 and heroin in the mix. Drug-sniffing dogs lead police to the stash, and a member of his "entourage" was arrested. Nelly was let go.
Note to tour managers: DON'T ROUTE YOUR ACT THROUGH SIERRA BLANCA IF THEY HAVE A LOADED GUN AND 36 BAGS HEROIN ON THEM. Or, really, at all.
Oh, Nelly. Can't we just go back to the simpler days? Like when you played the Wildflower Festival?

SB has a long history of being a notorious speed trap...state troopers work the area heavily. I usually try to be 5 mph under the limit any time I'm within 50 miles of the place.
the nearby border patrol checkpoint adds additional law enforcement scrutiny to travelers.
It's a full-on border checkpoint that has been there for decades. Come to a complete stop and the man walks the dog around, chats with the driver, etc.
here's a handy tip for noobs...don't be chatty with the agents. every time I've tried to be cordial and conversant, I seem to get a little extra attention from the dog handler.
just say 'good morning' and let the man ask his questions.
Were they headed into or out of Texas? My guess is in. See it is hard to reroute as HWY 10 is the only way in if you are headed to Austin or San Antonio. rerouting to Hwy 40 adds hundreds of miles. (works if you played Albequerque) If you are going to/from Phoenix/Tucson you are headed that route. You pass through Juarez so of course there are gonna be drug check points (duh). Note to folks: Again go Carlsbad/ Alamogordo but I'm sure they have checks there as well

"“We can seize thousands of pounds of narcotics and we don’t hear from anybody," said Rusty Fleming, the Hudspeth County Sheriff’s Office spokesman. “But we pop one little pop star or entertainer, and I’ll get anywhere from 50 to 200 e-mails from the international media from all over the world.”"
the BP checkpoint on Hwy 62/180 eastbound from EP will catch traffic heading to Carlsbad.
we used to do one-way tailwind rides on this stretch of road...we'd leave EP and have one of our GFs drive out later and pick us up...when the winds were howling, this was a total blast.
and yes, cyclists are required to stop at the checkpoints. being gringos, we were never suspected of being illegal aliens, but an agent did ask my partner to open up his saddle bag once. altho he did it somewhat jokingly, he did thoroughly inspect the contents.
even you could put a pretty nice sized block of hashish in a saddle bag, they're really more interested in the multi-hundred pound loads of weed, coke, etc.

we have the same sort of check points and yes we stop on our bikes as well. Near the town of Boulevard it is just a short walk to Mexico

They need to be smart like Tennessee and have the checkpoint on the westbound side. That way they can let the drugs through and then use that as an excuse to steal any and all money they find on drivers heading west. Drug money, and all that, you know.
Whenever the legislators endeavour to take away and destroy the property of the people, or to reduce them to slavery under arbitrary power, they put themselves into a state of war with the people who are thereupon absolved from any further obedience, and are left to the common refuge which God hath provided for all men against force and violence - John Locke
