    Disappointing update.

UPDATE: I heard from Dr Vanden Brooks that while the Paleozoic dragonflies had wingspans reaching up to 70cm in width, his dragonflies are only 15 per cent larger than normal ones. Disappointing, but at least we can sleep tight tonight.

A dragonfly can eat food equal to its own weight in about 30 minutes]

Imagine how many mosquitos a bunch of those paleozoic ones could eat? Probably drop the incidence of West Nile by a significant amount...

No sh!t! Because no one would want to go outside because the sky is full of giant fecking killer death dragonflies. Those giant hornets in Asia are bad enough.

Giant hornets are the #1 reason I don't believe in god. Regular hornets are bad enough...there is simply no way a benevolent deity makes GIANT hornets.

70cm wingspan? I think there would be more coverage somewhere about this thing? The photo definitely doesn't look real.

thing is, these aren't special "bred to be huge" dragonflies.

These are just normal dragonflies raised in a 30% oxygen environment. take them out of the lab, they'd probably die pretty quickly.

I found that the photo is actually a model of the prehistoric dragonfly.

I just found the following note on the gizmodo page...

Holy crap- those things are scary!!!

Each year in Japan, the human death toll caused by Asian giant hornet stings exceeds that of all other venomous and non-venomous wild animals combined, including wild bears and venomous snakes.

I saw one just recently, in fact. Also, in fact, I ride a Giant Chinook as my beater-commuter. Every time I ride it, I feel an almost over-powering urge to ride on the wrong side of the road.

OK, someone start breeding some giant gekko's to get this guys. When I was in TX, I saw a small gekko catch a moth bigger than him (not including the tail). It was impressive to say the least.

Good point. At least they were trying to make giant dragonflies, not giant house centipedes or giant camel spiders or giant giant hornets.

ps. Inventing Hello Kitty does not make up for Japanese giant hornets!
