    Pet names

One month from now my girlfriend and I will be picking up our new Golden Retriever Puppy! I wanted to call her Mavic but she insists that name is a boys name. Any suggestions for a girl golden retriever puppy that relates to cycling?

What a silly notion, everyone knows women don't cycle. I keed.
Off the top of my head, I would suggest Ruby, or if you are a Bianchi fan, Celeste.

I second Celeste. Very cool name. I might even steal it.

How can you pick a name for a puppy when you have no idea what her personality is? I don't get that.

It always cracks me up when I meet a dog with a name that just doesn't fit the dog itself.

I hate it when people name their animals before they even get them. Names are to be EARNED not arbitrarily given!

My wife is a big fan of the MLB pitcher Doug Davis and she wanted to name our next cat after him, but since we have 6 of the furry bastards it will be a while before we get another. So why don't you name the dog Doug Davis? You must admit it would be unique.

I'm not much help; my dogs always come with names.

Run the list of famous climbs; there's likely one that will sound feminine enough. Besides, that's how most cycling stuff gets named.

Otherwise, Athena comes to mind, but it's much to 'serious' a name for a dog as goofy (in a good way) as most Goldens.

My next dog will be Argos, Odysseus's dog. It will be a girl dog even though that is a boy dog name because I won't have boy dogs. I like to rub dog bellies without anything in the way.

Current dog, Maui, came named that. Wish I had changed it because it is stupid.

    I suggest "Big Leg Emma."

Or, "Claudine," (Eddy's wife) or "Sabrina" (Eddy's daughter.)

I expected the Rocky Mountains to be a little rockier than this.

I was thinking the same thing. That John Denver's full of $hit, man.

Our boy pug is Otto. But, I have named pets after European cities before. Kiev, Oslo, for example. Even had a cat named Bjork.

As for cycling girls names; Vela, Gira, Cervela, (dropping the O and adding an A)

I also like London Underground stations for names, Hampton, Victoria, Wembley,

With Pets you get nuts crazy on the name, just don't go nuts with your kids names.

As always, Len's right - but this name is a special one to me for a dog. Long sad story, but there was an older rescue taken in shortly before last Christmas. She was only around for a few months after that, but what an absolute sweetheart. At least she was very well cared for in her last months.

So if you do consider the name Celeste, she better d@mn well be a special one.

Boy dogs disagree with this assessment.

Haha Yes for a dog I tried calling her Celeste all night but she kept giving me the evil eye!

I definitely agree the name should match the dog that is why we also haven't picked a dog yet. We have first pick in a litter of 13 Golden's ranging in color from very light (almost white) to Mahogany.

A friend of mine had a big bernese mountain dog named Mavic. Another had a golden named Jobe (water ski). Seems like there is a connectino between their chosen sports and their dogs namese.

My daughter wanted a white kitten and wanted to name it Glacier. We went to the humane society and found this one. His name there was Mr. Mercedes.. It's now Mr. Glacier.

    for the history buffs...
    Scipio Africanus (AfriCanis?)
    Hannibal Barca

My first pet will be names Scipio Africanus.

Have a cat? I always thought that Emperor Nero was a great name for a cat.

My mom tells the story of her uncle that had a dog named 'Damn-it"

    Sit Damn it !
    Come here Damn it !
    ....

Also had a friend that had an uncle that back in the 50's named his black lab a .... racial name.... The dog jumped out of the the truck in a mostly black neghborhood. He didn't try and call the dogs name..
