Should I ask my neighbor why the cops picked him up?

I know the correct answer is, "mind your own f-ing business", but...

Yesterday morning a police cruiser was parked in front of my house for quite some time. My wife said that they were looking at our neighbor's truck that was also parked in front of our house.

After a while we went out into our garden to enjoy some morning sun and the policeman came over and asked about the truck. "Does it move regularly enough to assume that the owner is in his house if the truck is here?". "Well, probably but he also has a little MG that he might be out driving right now". "Thanks".

About 10 minutes later, another cop parked near the first and about 15 minutes after that they walked by with our neighbor. He wasn't in cuffs but got into the cop car and they all drove off. I saw him back in the neighborhood a few hours later.

He's only been in the neighborhood for a few months but I've drank beers with him and BSed about cars etc. before. He seems like a nice enough guy.

Any guesses as to why his Sunday morning started out so badly?

If he was back a few hours later, what ever he did couldn't have been "too" bad. I'm sure he's no Jeffrey Dahmer. So if you ask him, he probably won't keep your body parts in his freezer.

In my mid spent youth I had a night job in a Wawa.

It was a tiny store, with only 2 of us. We gave the cops free coffee, and they would stop in. After a while, one would get to know the cops pretty good.

I wanted some super duper pepper spray for the bike, and one of the officers ordered it for me.

When it came in, I happened to be working with a serious busybody.

Cop comes in, says”come outside for a minute “

The busybody was absolutely beside herself.

Maybe your guy just had to talk to them. Lots of reasons to talk to an officer.

the correct answer is, "mind your own f-ing business",
Of course, you already answered your own question. It could be any number of relatively innocent things. Did he move in alone recently? Could be an issue with an ex: child support, restraining order, property settlement issues.

If it comes up "spontaneously" next time you have a beer with him, maybe he'll say something.

Chances are, he's an axe murderer who chopped up and ate his last neighbor who ratted him out to the Police. He was probably let go because there was nothing left of the old neighbor.....The best reply to the Cops would be .."I see nothing, I hear nothing, and I know nothing."
If your opinion differs from mine, ..........Too bad.

I'm sure if he gets him to drink a 6 pack, it may come up more "spontaneously"

If you have his email, send him the following and see what his reaction is.

Check your local police blotter regularly, and perhaps the local police web site, if they post arrests. If the neighbor got into the car without being 'cuffed, he likely wasn't charged with a crime, or it was very poor procedure. Also, if the neighbor doesn't voluntarily tell you the story, consider it personal and sensitive. That's a dead giveaway.

What puzzles me is why the police gave him the ride, only to drive him back home. I would expect your neighbor to have driven his own vehicle down to the cop shop if he were filing a complaint. My next guess would be he was a witness to something, and the cops drove him by the scene to I.D. someone or something. If he were to visit the scene in one of his vehicles (which from your story sounds possible), then the suspects might recognize it, and him.

They probably took him in to ask him questions about you.

Curiosity killed the cat. But curiosity also keeps humans thriving. If you are brave enough to ask why then maybe you should. Or maybe you can just ask the officers asking you questions in exchange for your answers.

If there is a crawl space under this guy's house, go in there and investigate when he's not home.

You may have another John Wayne Gacy, a.k.a. Pogo the Clown on your hands.

The cops had to question "Pogo" Gacy a few times before they nailed him.

County court records are generally public. Look at your county court docket site and search for his name. If there are any charges against him they will show up.

You can check to see if any sex offenders live in your neighborhood, just Google it and you should be able to find your area. Worth looking into especially if you have kids.

no real mystery why the jerk in the rental house next door was recently escorted out to the police cruiser...

    LOL, that's the best!

Turns out he cosigned a check that bounced at the hardware store a couple years ago. If that's true, it seems like an overreaction on the PD's side to me.

There was probably a warrant for his arrest, maybe a missed court appearance. So they were probably obligated to take him. Given they didn't cuff him, I wouldn't say an over reaction.

Who co-signs a check these days? Who writes a check anymore at a store? I write one check per month to pay my house payment.

It seems to be a Montana thing. I see it less so each year but still more often than I would expect.
