    Of Course You Should

As long as you don't mind waiting for it. As yet, no delivery dates....
There still isn't even an order guide available for it, not that there are many options to choose from. At least here in the States.
Canadians can order them with a longer list of options including colors....

In stock here in Ontario. I have a choice. Was just looking at a bright green one at the dealer. The dealers are optioning them up too much but I can get a base car with DSG in grey, like the picture which is what I want, right now.

Here there's long list of "special" colors. The problem is the $3,000 upcharge.

Do they still have that horrible plaid interior? Buy one if you want, I wouldn't, the styling looks the same old same old.

    You're Golden.

There are but a couple of '17s left here in the States and the markups are absurd. A local dealer has one marked up to 55k.
The customer can put up a (refundable) deposit for a place in line for whatever allocation the dealer might get, but....
For that kind of $$, I'll wait for an RS3 Sportback. I'll probably be in the ground before those are shipped to NA.

MSRP here for the base 2018 with DSG is $43,465 CDN + freight & tax. That's about $34,500 USD. That's what dealers are asking.

Make sure it has DCC. I think all of them come with it now but I test drove one without it and the non-DCC suspension would get tiring. I'd personally want the 6-sp but the DSG is quicker. Otherwise get it.

That buys a lot of bikes and bike-vacations/tours.

Gets cold up north...do VWs even start when it is below 10C?

Audi is also VW....same pricing structure from Skoda to Porsche.....you have to pay for every extra! That’s the way they make money. Or selling a TT as a sport car even if it is basically a Golf. Or a Porsche Cayenne which is basically a Audi Q7 which is also a Touareg....

A Golf R can be however if well done a fine understatement car.

I'm off to the dealer this morning, hopefully to get a deal done on the grey one like the OP. Got a decent quote on the trade, will try a little haggling. We like the stealthy aspect.

Good timing. You've got a simultaneous end-of-month, end-of-quarter, and end-of-year going on this weekend. The dealership should be incentivized to deal, in order to make their numbers.

These things are a little hard to get, especially in the color I want and with the wheels I want. The 2018 option wheels are hideous IMO but the dealers are mostly ordering them. Now I'm promised a January delivery.

VW doesn’t have the reliability of Audi. A TTS is like 300 pounds lighter than a Golf and the TTS has a completely different AWD system with the “dynamic mode” putting power 40/60.

I needed a 5 door hatchback, and want something with performance without being too "boy racer" ish. Subaru don't seem to do the HB version of the WRX any more and the sedan has the big wing. Likewise the FOCUS RS is a little too showoffy and hardcore as well as only having a manual when I wanted to try a DSG type transmission. Lastly there's the Honda Civic racer thingy which is a fastback and looks like it should be in Star Wars.

On reliability, you are correct in general. And as an aside it's taken me more than 40 years to get over the horrorshow that was the '67 Beetle I once owned. The only thing in that death traps favor was that it made subsequent '70's GM's and Fords look good in comparison.

But back to the present. I immediately went to the source of all things reliability - Consumer Reports, and all is not lost. Firstly I'm doing one thing they reccomend which is buying a model that's been around a while. Secondly relatives of the GOLF R are now being recommended:

Newly Recommended Models With Improved Reliability
Audi A3, Chrysler Pacifica, Ford F-150, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Ram 1500, Volkswagen Golf Alltrack, Volkswagen Passat.
So fingers crossed for my first VW in more than 40 years.

This is the link but it may not be public https://www.consumerreports.org/car-...y-survey-2017/

No DSG is quicker unless you believe the Volkswagen lies. And in case you didn't know Volkswagen lies a lot. The only reason to buy a DSG is if a) you can't drive a stick (shame on you) or b) the wife will also drive it (shame on her).

Ok so it also could be that the husband will drive it if you're a girl cyclist, but I think we scared them all away.

    DSG is faster than manual.
But manual is more fun for some people. Usually that’s the one who think that they know how to drive a manual (some do. The vast majority just move the stick).

Take what you prefer. It‘s your car.

No human is quicker than a DSG/PDK auto-manual type gearbox. Additionally, these gearboxes make the best use of engine management software and shift points. Manual gearboxes are dying for a good reason; they are garbage in comparison to a good auto-manual. Ferrari dumped manual crap many moons ago.
