I get that they're protecting a nest... but do they have to dive bomb me twice a day (out and back)? And if they do, could they be a little less stealthy about it? It's become a four-step process.

Step 1: I hear the screech from a distance.
Step 2: I suddenly feel claws or a beak on the back of the helmet and hear the sound of hissing and wings flapping 1/2 an inch from my ear.
    Step 3: I pee a little.
Step 4: I try not to crash out.

You should carry a bazooka on your rides, to use against them. Thatíll show them!

will trade you for the lovely boat-tailed grackles we have...

noisy and thoroughly obnoxious. they are relentless at outdoor restaurants...they'll dive down and take food off your plate. not much to look at either, they don't even have any cool wing bars...pretty worthless birds. protected under the Migratory Bird Act, too...

oh, and their feces are like pH 1...leave that stuff on the paint of your car for more than an hour in direct sun and it'll eat right thru it. if you park under one of the trees that they roost in by the hundreds at nite, they can completely cover it by morning.

I like the way one red wing harasses you for 100 yards, then another one takes over, then another, then another........ All day long.
    Of course I'm sure...that doesn't mean I'm right.....

If you consider red-wing blackbirds to be @$$holes, they ain't got nothing on the brown-headed cowbird. They go to a sparrow's nest, toss one egg out, and lay theirs, then leave. The cowbird chick will grow twice as quickly as the sparrow chicks, and will throw them out of the nest as soon as he is able.

So far so good. On the ride today no dive bomb.

You know if this works, Iím going to buy 10,000 sets of Googly Eyes for $1 each, market them through Rapha or Rivendell or Velo Orange as ďBespoke Avian DeterrentsĒ for $79.99 each and retire early. Who wants in?

Not the first time I've heard they are jerks but there were a lot of them in NH where I grew up and they weren't. They must be regionally a-holes.

I think proximity to a nest is the key. I see them frequently on my rides, but in some spots they are extremely aggressive.

Wisconsin is the swamp around lake Michigan and Superior, they are swamp birds. There are a gazillion of them.

How timely, got smacked on the top of the melon by one just as I was finishing up a walk around the lake on my lunch break. Little effer scared the heck out of me.

Not as swampy here, but they line the ditches along the roadside, which is also where most of the MUTs run...

    Tonight on NatGeo

You know, I did it mostly as a joke, but I think the googly eyes actually work. Today, I watched the bird fly past me at a distance and start to circle around behind me, but he never dove. The same thing happened on the way back.

If it doesn't end up working, maybe attach a plastic owl to the helmet?
