IMO the only real place to get any miles in the City is riding the pathway along the west side hwy.

You could also startout in the city, anywhere on the west side hwy and ride up and over the GWB and back down into NJ. Ride out RT9 up north and you get a really nice long day.

Early morning in Central Park are the best way to do any kind of decent miles in Manhattan. To echo what others have said, across the GWB and up 9W is a fun time as well.
    It's never about technique.

Oh believe me I agree, that's way I mentioned going over the GWB and riding up RT9 north towards bear Mountain
