    Anglo Saxon Heritage. Sigh.

You know, just when I think the Romney campaign couldn't get dumber, they find a new level of stupidity.

I gotta tell you, my grandparents, who were both 100% Polish, positively bristled when they heard the term "Anglo-Saxon". My lovely wife is 100% not Anglo-Saxon, being a charming mix of Polish and Norwegian. Pretty sure the Italian and Irish community in the US remembers when Anglo-Saxon was code for "you need not apply".

    Mitt Romney

There's a sh!tload of non Anglo-Saxons here in the U.S. In fact, that's probably most of us.

As far as I know, the only folks who actually use the term "Anglo-Saxon" are f'ing Klansmen and Neo-Nazis.

This should be a career ender. It won't be, because he's gonna get a lot of support from loudmouthed eejits, but this is freaking horrible.

I was being sarcastic, calling Loto a "typical lib" for bringing up the fact that a Romney advisor brought up race.

It's not funny now that I've had to explain it.

As to whether or not anyone could think of Romney as a liberal, I guess it would depend on when in his political past one was looking and what standard he was being held to.

Ok, got it now. Yes, I sometimes wonder what Romney of 2002 would think of Romney of 2012.

I'm a liberal. Just want to clear that up. This comment is a non-issue. It wasn't Romney who said it, it was a staffer. That staffer obviously is either stupid or was trying to impress the Brits. Either way, it can't really be used against Romney in this campaign. There are many, many other things that can be used that are valid instead of resorting to an uproar over a soundbite.

Fair enough. It's one of those things you read, gets you mad and then you post without doing enough digging.

Shouldn't be an issue. Unless of course Romney doesn't dispute it (which he has a habit of doing).

The staffer was speaking on behalf of Romeny. If Romney doesn't agree with him, he better speak up.
On Tuesday, a campaign insider told the Daily Telegraph that Mitt wants to heal the divide between America and Britain that has emerged under Obama’s watch. “We are part of an Anglo-Saxon heritage,” they said, “and [Romney] feels that the special relationship is special.

This isn't anything new from the Romney campaign. They've continually attacked Obama for not being "American" not understanding "America", having "un-American" ideas, etc.

That's right-wing code for "he's black and not like us." The Romney voters know what he means.
They're trying to appeal to the base without scaring off independents with what are clearly racially-tinged comments.

Yet, when Bush won the SCOTUS case, you and yours went on about he was "not legitimate" and "not my President."

I wasn't here back then, first of all. There is a little "Join Date" to the left. Check it out.

Second of all, what does questioning whether Bush won the election legitimately have to do with Romney's questioning whether Obama's racial heritage makes him "different" and unable to understand "America"? Nothing.

Stay on the topic. Want to start a Bush thread, have at it.

Rush has bloviated for three days about Obama's "You didn't build your business......" reference to "the collective." "Dreams of my father." Anyone read it? Rush says this is the source of Obama's socialistic, communistic philosophy, and that he wants to punish the wealthy (like those Anglo-Saxon colonial overlords in Kenya), by transferring their wealth to those who don't "deserve" it. He hates America and wants to see it decline, so he "apologizes for America," makes compromises with old foreign rivals, like Russia, and talks to Iran, casting doubt as to his loyalty to Israel, you know, the Christian Holy Land. Finally, he's got that pesky middle name, Hussein, and we all know where THAT came from. Like the mark of Cain.

In this context, "Anglo-Saxon" is a strong code word purposely dropped to energize the base, the same judgement made with stubborn finality on every black man in American history. No matter what he has accomplished, he's not "Anglo-Saxon," not one of us. All else, whatever fits, is secondary.

Just a small factoid, Loto: Didn't the Saxons migrate to the British Isles from Norway?

Nope. Saxony is part of Germany. I believe you are thinking of the Vikings. Who would appear to have had more influence on the Celtic tribes.

Of course! At one time even I knew Saxony was in Germany! Making use of the wonders of wiki, it further becomes clear that Anglos were also from Germany. They both settled in Eastern Angleterre (French), or England, crowding out the "indigenous Britons" to the west, "who wrote in Latin and Welsh." That was 500 years before the Norman invasions.

Nonetheless, the Vikings came down from the north, as you say, influencing the Celts. Could be they had common ancestors in Jutland, where the Anglos were from, and perhaps even Saxony. So your lady isn't that far off, culturally speaking, to the Anglo-Saxons who made America the greatest nation on earth!
