Guns Spark Blaze - 1000's evacuated

FOX News reports that a major fire in Utah was likely started by firearms causing the evacuation of over 2,000 residents. The fire threatened homes about 30 miles south of Salt Lake. This is one of 19 wildfires started by guns this year in Utah.

"Now is not a good time to take your gun outside and start shooting in cheat grass that’s tinder dry,” Utah Gov. Gary Herbert said Friday.

While authorities can ban certain fire-related activities when fire risks are high, that’s not true with guns, the carrying and use of which are staunchly protected by state and federal law, including several recent Supreme Court decisions.

In Utah, for example, a state law prohibits the state from enacting emergency bans on guns, putting Gov. Herbert in a position of instead asking county governments to issue emergency rules for outdoor gun use as wildfire conditions prevail across the West.

I was going to come up with some snarky "don't try to deny me my rights" comment but how could I possibly surpass this?

Lucky for us out here in the drought-ridden West the Founders forgot to include a fireworks clause.

It's people's God-given right to start fires by shooting guns into dry tinder, apparently. I suppose, according to him, people shouldn't surrender their right to free speech when they enter a crowded theater either.

Stupid rednecks. These morons give responsible gun owners a bad rap. I have several friends who take gun ownership very seriously and take classes on a regular basis. They hate stories like this, where some stupid hillbilly goes out and starts a fire.

Wonder if the 2nd Amendment provides immunity to arson?

Maybe we should ban anything that could cause a fire on a hot summer day...

Weed whackers start far more fires than guns, how 'bout we ban whackin' it on a hot summer day? Oh, we already did...But there's one more law that could be written...lets write it boys!!!

Gee whiz, maybe we should ask people to ask responsibly. Oh not, that might hurt someone's second amendment feelings.

Firearms have started 20 wildfires in Utah this year. How many wildfires have been started by weed whackers?

When you were in your 20's didn't you and your work buds load up some beer, a picnic and the weed whackers and head into the national forest for a day of clean up?

BTW how close are the CS evac zones to you? My kids told me that my ex (who lives on Dairy Ranch) was in a voluntary zone as of this morning.

I live 10 miles from Boulder, nowhere near CS. I'm about 50 miles from the big fire near Ft. Collins. My house is more likely to burn in the next couple of weeks from illegal fireworks.

Oh well, for some reason I thought you lived in CS. Glad you don't.

Fireworks will be my bane too although our governor is asking people to exercise restraint. Versus just banning them.

Fireworks are banned in my city, so I have to celebrate with a weed whacker instead.

This time someone was shooting exploding targets. Last time, someone just happened to shoot some rocks which sparked.

People need to be smart. I have fired thousands of rounds and not started any fires. I can see this fire from my house...it's burning like crazy. I'm about to head out for a ride and if the wind it's blowing smoke away, my planned route takes me right by the fire (within a mile)...that's only if I can do it without riding in smoke.
