Native American backlash over OBL's Geronimo code name

    Here's a typical report.

When I first heard the news of Bin Laden's death, and heard they'd used Geronimo E-KIA, despite my jubilation and relief, I thought "yeah, that's gonna come back to haunt them." As opposed to PC madness as I am, though, I do sort of agree that it was an unfortunate choice, though that's the Cherokee in me.

I'd have preferred they'd used the word Madoff. Or Skeletor.

    yup

Yup, looks like being a minority doesn't make you any more politically correct, at least as to other minorities.

I can think of better code names, though:

    Slimebag, Douche1, Fvckhead...

Or, here's whole list of really good/bad ones:

Your last sentence made me laugh out loud. With you 100%. When I read the Geronimo thing the other day I remember thinking that this would ruffle some feathers. I can't believe that they let that kind of mission detail get out. If I were the White House that little tidbit would have been either redacted or changed wholesale. It wasn't even neccessary to know what the code name was.

And it's not even about being PC really. Could you imagine them giving him a code name like "Lincoln", "King", "Mohammed" or "Kennedy"?

It's still OK to male bash.

Especially Katrina & The Waves. Extremely bad taste! They'll never play a show again.

They should've named it "operation bath salt sniffing cross dressing goat fvcker"

No reasonable person would complain about that.

Pretty sure the codename predates Obama's presidency.

A very good friend of mine is a full blood Apache, descendant of Geronimo. She thinks the complaints are stupid. I'll defer to her, I will not repeat what she said about non-Apache tribes complaining...

The problem doesn’t stem with the name of the operation or the target. Your weren’t on the hit during the operation so you don’t have a say. The problem begins with all of the information being leaked out after the fact. The more the public knows about how things work the more our adversaries know too. Who cares what they called him. What if Geronimo was the code name that was used for the last ten years, and all of a sudden its causing controversy because he’s dead. Give me break..!

non Aztec Americans Indians were making a fuss of the SDSU Aztecs
the ones of Aztec descent seem to love it
I said, change the name to Conquistadors and see how they feel

I've always had a weird reaction with this, even weirder since I worked for many years within the American Indian community. I mean if any ethnic group should understand totemization it should be them. I used to ask them "Bear Clan" is bear an honorable symbol???

Don't even get her started on changing the Stanford Indians to Cardinal, or the "tree" mascot.
