NATO takes over command of military operations in Libya

NATO is taking over command of military operations in Libya from coalition forces, world media reported Sunday.

The UN Security Council imposed the no-fly zone over Libya on March 17, along with ordering "all necessary measures" to protect civilians from Muammar Gaddafi's attacks on rebel-held towns.

The 28 NATO ambassadors met on Sunday to decide on further military plans in Libya.

The United States transfers command for a no-fly zone over Libya to NATO, while coalition forces will continue to protect civilian population from attacks by Gaddafi forces.

The military operation in Libya, codenamed Odyssey Dawn, has been conducted so far jointly by 13 states, including the United States, Britain and France.

NATO members decided on Thursday to assume responsibility for the enforcement of a no-fly zone in Libya, but could not agree on taking full command of all military operations in the country.

Meanwhile, leaders of the 27 European Union states on Thursday issued a statement saying the EU stood ready to assist in building a new Libya "in cooperation with the United Nations, the Arab League, the African Union and others."

Unless they enacted a "no-bike zone" I'm not sure why you're posting this here.

EDIT - thread was originally in "General Cycling" forum.

Ok, I took the bait. What is the big deal, only 3 wars going on, may as well start another war, go for #4. Just call it a humanitarian mission and lie about it. The people in Libya are 10% Human and 90% Animals. Best thing to do is let them kill one another. Meanwhile I will be riding my bike here and not having a care in the world over there. The world needs bikes, not bombs. Spread the bikes.

    I wish them luck.

The humans in Libya, spontaneously fighting out of pickup trucks, using seized weapons, wearing no uniforms, having no ranks, getting no pay, aren't following orders from some shadowy svengali in the background, they're doing it for personal freedom and freedom of their countrymen from a despot who's held them down over one generation. They're doing it to improve their lives and the lives of their children. They deserve the world's support.

Qaddafi is a deluded idiot. He'll richly deserve what he gets.

The real ***** of the deal is we pulled a fast one on the American people. NATO does not have a fighting force capable of maintaining the no fly zone, so we simply transferred all of our forces being used to NATO control. Essentially we did nothing but give command of our forces to another entity. We are still flung the same amount of missions. All DC spin going on here.

NATO does not have permanent combat units. They are drawn from the NATO members when they are needed. The commander of NATO has always been an American General or Admiral.

So why would you step up to maintain a no fly zone if you have no forces of your own? Why not let a nation run it who can support it? France had a carrier in the med and AWACS land based. They would be better off doing it themselves. A military is ineffective when it serves more than one master.

A story appeared on the news a few days ago about a Libyan jet being shot down, while landing according to bigbill , by a French jet, the purpose of which was to enforce the no fly zone. So they've already been participating, not just Americans. The new commander is a Canadian.

The problem with all this is that Gaddafi (however it's currently spelled) can send columns of tanks and personnel carriers to wipe out the rebels. No aircraft needed. It's not like a tank needs close air support to take out a toyota pickup. Unless the rebels get better armed and organized, it just going to be a drawn out civil war that will cost the lives of thousands before the rebels go into hiding.

IMO, the threat of boots on the ground should have never been taken off the table. A combined land force of NATO and League of Arab Nations would be a very real threat to Gadaffi and force his exit.

As it stands now, the clock is running on the rebels. When they lose, Gadaffi loyalists will go house to house identifying people who supported the rebels and killing them and their families. It's all a big mess and it will get worse before it gets bad.
