    What would you do?

There's a teenager standing outside your house who doesn't like you. In his hand he has a rock, at his feet is a partially assembled shot gun. He's threatening to start shooting through the windows.

You tell him he needs to go home and stop bothering you, he laughs in your face.

You go to his father (China) who tells you he'll help, but he does nothing. The kid is still there.

You go to the police (UN) and they say they'll give him a stern talking to (sanctions). But this has no effect on his actions.

The kid is still there, yelling at your house, threatening to shoot up the place. And now he is assembling the shotgun.

    What do you do?

    What would you do?

If itís Trump* in the house??? Puff out your chest, threaten him and call his bluff, of course. Cuzí that always works...

But itís not a rock or a shotgun the kidís holding... itís a bag of hand grenades. And heís just as likely to start tossing them at the neighbors houses (South Korea, Japan) if this keeps up.

Simple. Go back to school shopping a Walmart and become a hero.

Stop using using bad analogies. In our case, we have several hundred bazookas pointed at the kids head, and we can pull the trigger at any time.

Who said it hasn't? They have't pulled the trigger. The gun is already assembled - they won't be putting it down, but that doesn't mean they are going to use it.

What makes you think we aren't inviting it by attacking? The assessment is that they likely already have a functional nuclear ICBM.

Besides, we have such a fantastic track record launching preemptive attacks over WMDs

meh, Kim has nothing to gain by actually nuking anyone...he launches one and his little empire will be turned to cinders. no more hookers and blow for him then...

his whole gambit is to posture, threaten, and elevate his power position among other countries.

Let's say you live in a neighborhood where all of the bullies have guns and they all steer clear of each other because they know that in a gunfight they stand to be killed as much as kill someone. But you don't have gun, so you are always at risk. I'm guessing under those circumstances, you'd want a gun.

Why does Israel have them? Or the U.S.? They have them to threaten others & to protect themselves. They treat countries that have nukes differently than those that don't.

Waiting for the mushroom cloud... I remember Cheney didn't want the smoking gun to be a mushroom cloud either.

Yea...this ranks right up there with conservatives talking about national/world macroeconomics via the context of personal grocery shopping.

He's smart enough to know that's never going to happen. Nukes won't allow him to successfully invade the South, and there's no realistic scenario where the North wins a conventional war with the South.

Kim doesn't intend to invade the south.

He threatens, they back down. He sees them as weak. Once he gets them to kick the US out he can start a Russian style disinformation campaign to get a puppet government in place.

Once he has the south's money, he has a lot more options.

I'm surprised at how naÔve so many here seem to be.

Let's add the rest of the story of this analogy: the whole neighborhood is holding their breath because the house the kid is standing in front if is the home of the only person so far to have used his shotgun on any of the neighbors. Add to that, he (the person in the house) has recently been diagnosed as mentally unstable... anyone wonder why the neighbors are quaking in their boots?
Life is short... enjoy the ride.

you pull out your big arsenal of weapons and kill him, his family, level his home, destroy anyone close to him whether they like him or not

    yeah, that's the ticket

he maybe has an ICBM that works, maybe. They may be able to launch it and possibly keep it on target. It is likely it will be shot down by the numerous air defense systems out there or may just fall in the ocean. Meanwhile a single Ohio Class opens every hatch and destroys him and his entire nation while some warship launches a grip of nuke loaded tomahawks and conventional ones to ensure he doesn't get away. Do you think he's that dumb? Do you think he doesn't understand our capabilities?
He wants attention, he wants to feel like a big player. Trump is giving him that
one nation, under surveillance with liberty and justice for few

    still not figgering on biggering

If, as you say, he understands all that, at what point does he back down and stop building missiles and nukes?
