Help with CompuTrainer
So I have had a CompuTrainer for a year. I rarely use it as I ride outside except under the absolutely harshest of conditions. When I do use it I simply ride on the flat course and do intervals since they are totally repeatable and a good measure of increased fitness. All that said I know you can create specific workouts, use various aftermarket videos etc...
Guess what I am asking is how and what should I do to get more out of my expensive toy.
1. ride it more
2. do benchmark tests on yourself. FTP is the most common one, but you could also target 1 and 5 minutes.
3. train to set pb's in those benchmarks.

* not actually waterproof.
I've had one since 2003 and use it.
Last winter was my most effective training.
I bought the Carmichael Climbing Series DVDs and followed that protocol.
With the Computrainer, it was easy to do the tests and then ride based on exact power.
It was very hard but worth it.
There are several new ride along DVDs too but I haven't tried them.
I've had one for 9 years, and like you, hate to use it except when absolutely necessary. I hate riding indoors. I'd rather be riding in 34 degree pouring rain.
So, if I am going to use it, here is the workout I like best. Use a course with a moderate amount of climbing. Set it to drafting mode, and the computer rider to about 100 watts more than your threshold. Then, get going and try to stay in the draft. If you fall back at all, it gets harder very quickly. I think perfect drafting is about 6-7 feet (front wheel to front wheel). So, try to hold it right at 7 feet. If you fall back to 20 feet or more, you'll have to hit 600 watts to catch up. Forces you to concentrate, and that makes the time pass more quickly. Save that workout, then next time use the saved ride as your pacer.
Gets lots of air flow, too. I set up a large fan blowing low and another on a stand blowing at my face. That seems to help make it more tolerable.
When my fist clenches, crack it open
Before I use it and lose my cool
When I smile, tell me some bad news
Before I laugh and act like a fool
To me the best thing about the computrainer... is you can use.... ERG Video's!!
I don't have the new HD videos but the 'old' ones are great... Lots of stuff you can do, it is pretty realistic imo and can be very intense, especially the crit videos... I do remember it being a bit of a challenge to set up the first time, but once set up it was easy to use.
