I am going to go out on a ride this weekend and try and get a handle on my TT threshold.
I have Joe Friel's book on Cycling over 50 and it has a formula based on a 10K time trial. I have read some threads about how to pace a 10K race but I could not find anything on trying to find TT threshold. After warmup, do you start hard and go up from there or do you go all out as long as you can hold it.
I think he actually recommends a 10 mile TT...a 20k could also substitute. Most riders would be able to push over threshold power for a 10k effort. Are you looking for just average heart rate or do you have a power meter?
I am looking for average heart rate. I am not serious enough yet to invest in a good power meter. I will double check but I think there are a number of different distances. Each has a slightly different formula. I belive that you divide by 1.02 for a 10K training effort. The formula is also different for a training ride vs a race. I will be able to do a longer test once they get the roads in decent shape here. I found a good out and back for the 10K distance that is free of potholes (as of last weekend at least). If I am pushing it I don't want to have to worry about the road conditions. I suppose I could do the 10K out and back twice to get to the 20K.
You want your effort to be as constant as possible over the distance. There is pain involved.
I wouldn't think of it so much as, OK I tested myself now I know my heart rate zones, but think of it more like a trial to come back to every few weeks. You'll get better at knowing how much you can push yourself, what is too much, etc etc.
