L' Eroica Rules
I am interested in riding in the L' Eroica ride and have a couple questions. I pulled the rules and guidelines off their web page and was hoping to find someone that has either ridden in or plans on riding this ride. The rules state that the frame and components must have been manufactured before 1987. I have a 1976 frame, so I am good to go there. My question is on the components. How many cogs will I be allowed to have in back? Can I use index shifting or will I have to use friction? Do handlebars count as a component or can I use my 3 year old Noodles? What about the BB, since it's not seen, can it be newer? Any help or suggestions you have would be much appreciated. Thanks.
With very few exceptions, you are looking at 6 speed and fewer...friction shifting.....
Shimano had SIS shifting prior to 87 but it depended on the model...(Dura Ace 6 speed index was before 87)
as for the BB, I seriously doubt they wouldn't let you ride because of a new BB...
The rules say downtube shifters are required, no specification if indexed or friction. You didn't mention the pedals, so I'll mention it: you'll need toe clips and straps. See:

It was a fantastic race.
My friend Reinhold and i, we had no flat tire, thanks to the Conti 4 Season, 28 mm.

By 'bikes for the Eroica' we mean all the road race bikes built before 1987, with downtube shift levers, toe clips and straps, non-aero routing of the brake cables (i.e. not through the handlebars or along the handlebars.) Bikes with more recent built frames can be used, but features like handlebars, shifters, pedals, etc. must be vintage.
The organizers may concede dispensations for other types of bikes, if requested, for physical/sensory disabled participants.
For the 38Km ride, other vintage bike types are allowed, such as military bikes, postman bikes, other work bikes in general, roadsters, etc. with the exclusion of mountain bikes.
It is expressly forbidden to take part in the event using bikes that do not possess the above requirements. Any individual attempting to do so will be made to eat a large plate of 3 week old polenta and generally be made fun of, especially if he is foreign.
