Bent.....IMO.

Don't move for the money.

Move for the opportunity to learn more and grow faster.
Move for a bigger challange and a bigger stretch.

Don't move for the money. At your age, on the list of important things to consider (once you earn a basic pay for your experience and education), money should be way down the list.....there are too many more important things that will improve your lifetime earnings more than short term money.

IMO, YMMV.

Haha...

The funny part is that since I am in material science, I am much more well versed in the Metric system than the rest of the professions around. They are stuck in imperial units like pound-mass and Rankine. I present a file with micrometers on the picture, and the stress weenies squirm.

First bike is to go into production roughly around January 1. It will be a Bamboo cruiser with an internal 8 speed hub, and curved front bars. FTW

O-Line is kinda slow, but functional. Has the Redline Lifted the restriction on bikes during rush hour?
No idea. I didn't see any mention of that on their website. But what I was looking at was riding the busway path to Sepulveda, then catching the Sepulveda bus over the pass to Wilshire/Veteran, then riding from there to wherever. My biggest client is in Santa Monica and I go there at least twice a week. This would be a rad way of getting there.

Finding photogenic valley spots, and all...
Is that supposed to be funny?

PS... get an MTB.
No.

Currently I am well paid, but rumors circulate about this company offering up to 50% raises to entice would-be employees. Downside is no paid OT, but I make maybe 5-10% OT/year. I dont think they will pay for school... but enough of a raise could make me rethink.

They are also 25 miles farther than my current employer (ironically, only 10 miles from Rocket Gurl). So. Whats your price? If you didnt have to move, how much would it take for you to defect to a different company? Lets say the work would be equally or more stimulating.

Money can't buy happiness. Although, it can rent it for a little while...

How long will it take to get a 50% increase at your current co? 5 yrs?

Jump! Factor in annual raises on top of the increase during the same timeline.

Like you said, everyone has a price.

You must be pretty comfortable financially to avoid the increase in salary [if] offered by this competitor. Must be nice to be young and design your early life around just "interesting" work.

Here's a thought for you. Your competitor is aggressive enough to source out the best talent to not only be competitive ...but to exceed its competition. That's a company I'd be interested in, flattered even for being considered. Image if they hire that guy that out performs you in your business? Staying in business means making decisions for the long near term. If a business thought they were "satisfied" and "doing well enough" while not push it too much ...they'd be out of business. As a business you hire employees with the same mission statement [hopefully]. Winning teams.

Anyways you're only as good as those who work for you and those you work for.

Myself? Wouldn't even think twice, as T0G said, "I believe in hitting the irons when hot." And while I negotiated that larger chunk of change with that competitor I'd be looking for opportunities the second hired in that new job seat, -> looking for the long near term to staying on top. No one takes care of you. You take care of you. Don't be fooled.

Good luck.

I think the question here is "what's your motivator?" For some, it definitely is money. For me, it's been quality of life. I did a crappy 40 mile commute each way for 2 years. Never again. I'd rather make less and have time to ride my bikes, work on my house, and spend time with friends and family.

Only you can decide what your priorities are. Good luck making this decision.

I took a 20% paycut to move from where I was to where I am now.

Never looked back and it'd take a stupid amount of money and an equal commute (less than a mile) in the same type of environment for me to go anywhere, unless something drastic changes here. I commuted ~130 miles a day for 6 years. Enough is enough.

Paying off debt sooner is all well and good but money isn't everything and my quality of life is better now than it was with more money, and I'm still paying things off early.

FWIW We're about the same age.

Do you have an employment contract with your current employer that has any confidentiality or non-competition provisions? Depending upon the applicable state law the provisions may or may not be fully enforceable. But, no matter what the law may be, if you are serious about making a move to a competitor, make sure that your prospective employer knows what the provisions are and is willing to deal with any restrictions on what you can or cannot do. A few years ago, I had to deal with a train wreck of a situation where my client actively pursued and hired someone, but he did not share all of the terms of his employment agreement with his former employer with my client. After some very expensive litigation, the employee's activities were severely restricted. As a consequence, he could not do what my client needed him to do and ultimately he found himself out on the street without a job.

To a majority of people in the sciences and engineering, "interesting" work is the primary reason they get out of bed in the morning. Money is secondary. I know; I was there. That changed when I realized that it is tougher to raise a family on "interesting".

Bent, how stable is the program you are working on? Is it fully funded for a couple of years? Is there a re-bid coming up? A lot of mil-aero companies will staff up for a contract, but if they don't win it, release people that they hired. Is the competitor going after the same contract? Take a bigger look at the business picture.

I don't mean this the way it may sound, but if they are looking at you they are looking at other people as well. Are they looking at making a play for your company's contract?

It never hurts to go to an interview to find out some of these questions.

I reread the initial post, the first post by Bent. He already has answered his question actually. If you're not going to relocated closer and do the commute adding an extra 50 miles a day ....his price has to be high. Remember if you're bating on Linked In it means you want to bite when seeing tasty hooks.

And to answer your observation in faith, I do work in the field of science.
