Interesting stuff, sounds about right from what I've heard of MS from those involved -- I live in the Sound, so have a fair bit of contact with those guys, but am not personally acquainted with the corporation as you are.
I guess I mentioned them solely because the money they made allowed the Gates foundation to exist, and it's really doing a bunch of good.

Not because of Gates, and frankly the antitrust stuff doesn't bother me much, since every customer in every single transaction had (and still has) legitimate competing alternatives.
But because of the way they operate. Those incredibly thick gross margins (90%+ in big accounts) allow for a lot of waste and bloating.
On the other hand, their internal "message discipline" is simply remarkable. I've not seen it matched in any company, anywhere. All the 'softies that I've dealt with, have ingested ALL the kook-aid and keep coming back to the well for more.
