Beautiful city with adequate housing, but not all that easy to get to. Can't imagine what an air fare will be from the East Coast. You can fly to Portland and drive out with me and rest of the crew.

Keeping it in Oregon but away from Portland is an interesting move. Eugene would be another suitable spot.

I guess Portland can't get all the love...

Bend? In Jan?

#1 criteria for a race such as nationals should be a major airport in that city.

So you want all those people driving across the mountains to get to Bend? Yeah. That's a brilliant idea for January.

Might as well hold it in Leadville. Or Chelan.

Go piss on a 3rd rail

The drive i took up to Winthrop from Seattle is still very fresh in my mind. That side of the mountains ain't the same as the other side.

Maybe Ecola state park would be good. Run the course along side the cliff... any bad line has ya flying out into the Pacific!

Chelan is a major city - it now has a SBUX - and an airport.

Would USAC really do this...probably so.

Just used Mapquest and from PDX to Bend it says 157 miles...they go some back road though, US 26E

From Denver on United, you cant get to Bend. Best bet is to get a flight to Eugene and then drive there.

Could be a fun trip though...heard the beer is really good in Bend

There's a decent airport in Redmond as well (RDM) - only a 20 mile drive from Bend.

January, though? Cold as F, and would be almost guaranteed to only see snow or dry days...no mud or rain to speak of.

McKenzie Pass is closed over the winter. From Eugene you'd have to drive up to Salem and then take Santiam Pass, through Sisters to Bend.
Much better to fly into Redmond. which is 18 miles from Bend.
High desert is dry, there'd be snow. we wouldn't have the mud that we do in Portland.

Salem? Nah....you either go up 126 (up the McKenzie River) to 20 and over Santiam Pass to Sisters then Bend, It's 242 that goes over McKenzie Pass that is closed in winter. The other option is to go up 58 over Willamette Pass then up 97 to Bend.

Either way, you gotta cross the mountains in the snow, but I wouldn't worry too much, I dont think Nationals in Bend will be happening anytime soon.

But hey....they've used a water truck to make mud.for their races, so why not. I raced a nightime race over there under the lights at one of the schools 5 or 6 years ago. That was pretty cool. Give them points for trying..

Holy moly again. If you guys who live in the state can't figure a good way of getting there, how are the rest of us knuckleheads going to manage?

I guess that is one way to limit fields sizes. Put the race in a place that nobody can get to.

Maybe Microsoft will sponsor it being Bend is so close to Redmond.

"It's all but a done deal that 'cross nationals will be held in January 2010 right here in my newly adopted hometown of Bend!"

All but a done deal. That's not quite a done deal. When I see THAT press release I'll believe it. Meanwhile, this press release came out yesterday.

BEND VISITOR & CONVENTION BUREAU INITIATES BID PROCESS TO HOST 2009 AND 2010 USA CYCLING CYCLOCROSS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS IN BEND
Local Organizing Committee Being Formed, Potential Race Venues Identified

(BEND, Ore.)--The Bend Visitor & Convention Bureau today announced that it is forming a local organizing committee and has initiated conversations with USA Cycling in an effort to secure the 2009 and 2010 USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships in Bend.

The USA Cyclocross National Championships attract approximately 1,800 competitors annually, and between 3,500 and 4,000 people including support staff, families and media. Because the championships typically take place the second weekend in December – a traditionally slow tourism period that falls between the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays when occupancy levels at Bend lodging properties are well below 40 percent – they would provide a welcome boost for the local tourism economy.

In a letter of intent being sent to USA Cycling, Bend Visitor & Convention Bureau president and CEO Doug LaPlaca cited Bend’s unique combination of scenic beauty, world-class recreation, outstanding amenities and overwhelming enthusiasm for cycling throughout the community as reasons why the organizing committee believes Bend is the perfect destination to host the Cyclocross National Championships.

“Bend has all the amenities, resources and enthusiasm needed to host a national event such as this, especially at a time when tourism numbers are typically slow in the region,” said Doug LaPlaca, president and CEO of the Bend Visitor & Convention Bureau. “By identifying windows when occupancy levels are low, and targeting major events that can help fill those gaps, we have the opportunity to generate significant incremental tourism revenue which in this case would equate to more than $1 million in tourism spending per year.”

The organizing committee that is being assembled to pursue the event includes representatives from the Bend Visitor & Convention Bureau, Oregon Sports Authority, the City of Bend, Bend City Council, the Riverhouse Conference Center, Central Oregon Velo, and representatives from Bend’s cycling community, including professional and former professional cyclists who call Bend home. Renowned national cyclocross race director Brad Ross is also part of the committee and has already scouted potential race venues.

According to USA Cycling, Cyclocross races are typically held on grassy loops, no longer than a few miles in length, with a few short road or dirt road sections. There are numerous sections where riders must dismount to run over man-made barriers placed around the course. Mud and slippery conditions are very common, and the best courses are serpentine loops that give spectators plenty of viewing opportunities while challenging riders with steep, short hills and sharp, technical corners.

In recent years, the Cyclocross National Championships have been held in Portland, Ore. (2003, 2004), Providence, Rhode Island (2005, 2006), and Kansas City, Missouri (2007, 2008).

About the Bend Visitor & Convention Bureau:
The Bend Visitor & Convention Bureau is a non-membership, non-profit economic development organization dedicated to promoting tourism on behalf of the City of Bend. For more information or to order a complimentary Official Visitor’s Guide to Bend, contact the Bend Visitor & Convention Bureau at 1-800-949-6086 or visit www.visitbend.com .

I don't know squat about Bend but the next five days are mid 30s to low 40s. That's not so cold. Are they in a warm spell right now? Some of you made it sound like Point Barrow Alaska

Mid 30s to low 40s is typical for Bend. We did have a really big storm last week and accumulated snow in town - up towards a foot. It rained yesterday and was warm today and we are down to 6 inches or so. By Tuesday I am guessing it will mostly be gone. We often have winters that you can road ride from town and head east every weekend. The mountain biking is a bit more limited as the trails are west of town. If the race were held somewhere in town or on the east end of town (someone mentioned Big Sky park) then chances are at least 50/50 that there wouldn't be much snow, temps would be in the high 30s/low 40s, and it would be sunny.

It's not really all that hard to get here. You can fly into Redmond (RDM) which is 25 minutes away. Portland is just over 3 hrs in the winter and if the pass has too much snow to get over it (maybe half a day a month?) you can always head east on 84 to the Dalles and come down highway 197 to 97. That's about 4 hrs, which is how long going over the pass on a crappy day would take. Eugene is about 2.5 hrs away and there are two different passes you can use - Santiam or Willamette.

Anyone who wants to stay longer after the race can go to Mt Bachelor or XC ski at any of the snow parks.

It sounds like the weather at KC was worse than we get in Bend. Don't be afraid.

It looks like it's far from a done deal and the referenced date sounds like the second week in Dec. With that said, I hope it happens as it's only a few hours from my digs. Bend is a great city and the odds are is that it'll be clear, dry and not too cold. I do believe the numbers will be far less than KC. I was amazed at how many folks drove 10-12 hours to KC. That's likely not going to happen in Bend. Yes. PDX to RDM is very doable, but it's an expensive leg.
