Making the other side seem worse than they are...

I'm so baffled by nasty email forwards and re-postings that I have to rant a little, and ask for help understanding it all. For example, from this Veterans day - the one that purportedly shows Obama not respecting our country and our veterans by not saluting when everyone else is. Here's the text:

Send this to everyone who claims to be an American.............if they are truly Americans, this will sicken them regardless of party affiliation................Please forward.

Subject: Picture from Wednesday's Veterans Day Ceremony - 11 November 2009!
Date: Sun, 15 Nov 2009 15:26:08 -0600

Picture from Wednesday's Veterans Day Ceremony - 11 November 2009!

Veterans Day Ceremony - November 11, 2009 - Arlington National Cemetery. National Anthem EVERYBODY in the picture is either saluting or has hand over their heart - All except ONE. He is a sorry disgrace to our military, our veterans and our country. He will bow to the king of Saudi Arabia, to Japan's Emperor, & China but won't salute or respect our veterans. Now, tell me again, “Who’s the President of the U.S.?”

The truth is that the picture was taken during his introduction, and the playing of Hail To The Chief.

The mystery to me is several-fold:

1. Why would someone make this crap up in the first place? If Obama and the Dems are so terrible, why don't they just present the terrible stuff that they really do? Could it be that they're like the scum who write viruses, and get some sick thrill at seeing their "work" circle the globe?

2. How can people be so gullible as to forward and repost this kind of propaganda without checking it out themselves? A huge percentage of the stuff I see is either twisted or completely made up. If you are forwarding and reposting stuff, you must have internet access, so why not check things out first?

3. Do people not realize that spreading manure makes them smell bad? Are they making a calculated decision that the recipients of their forwards won't know they're false, or won't view the sender as being less credible if they do know? Seriously, how can you respect someone, or trust them if they're spreading lies? Why do people choose to decrease their own credibility?

4. Is personal integrity not important? Aside from losing credibility in the eyes of others, do they not care how they look to themselves? How can a person have any pride, or feel good about themselves when they're spreading hate based lies?

5. Why, when you provide documentation of the inaccuracy, do so many forwarders get more upset (Don't bother me with facts!) rather than accept the information and learn from it? I don't care if they don't admit a mistake, or apologize or anything, but how does the mind work that just makes the same wrong argument again, only louder and with more anger?

6. Do they not understand the story of the boy who cryed wolf? There is so much meaningless noise coming from ignorant haters, that people whose minds would normally be open to both sides tend to tune out the right. Thinking conservatives, who should have a real voice in the world are being drowned out by the idiots on their own side.

For the record, I think of myself a moderate. The actions of both parties are equally despicable. I would have voted for McCain any time throughout the 80's and 90's, but I felt that he sold his soul to the party after the Bush campaign smeared him in 2000, and then to clinch my decision, he chose Palin. Even Fox has bailed on Palin, as you can tell from the video below (speaking of spreading BS). They've decided that she will not be the next Republican candidate for president.

It's OBVIOUSLY because the other side is evil. Everything thing they say is a lie, everything they do is designed to ruin my life and my family's. EVery bad thing that's happened in their fault, while every good thing that's happened, we did. They are un-American scum and their presence here is an abomination. They should be eliminated.

That about cover it?

It goes both ways. If you are a liberal, I'm sure you have seen plenty of e-mail forwards from your liberal friends about Bush, Sarah Palin, Cheney, etc. Heck, I get them from my liberal friends and I'm a conservative. Were you this fired up about it when you received those forwards? Me, I don't have the time to check out every single one that gets sent to me, so I don't forward them. When I do have some free time, I like to do the research. Kind of like the thread we had on here about the person at the soup kitchen using a cell phone to take a picture of Michelle Obama. Funny thing is that I recently ran into a picture of a friend of mine that volunteers at that soup kitchen with Michelle Obama from that day. I forgot to ask him about the person with the cell phone camera, but I'll try to remember to do it today. Anyway, even with all the research about that forward, it was tough to figure it out one way or the other.

So, did you do the research on this forward that you received? I'm dying to know if it is true or not. Was Obama merely photo shopped into the pic to make it look like he is a moron, or was he actually not saluting? I would assume that it is the former and not the latter. I would like to think that he would salute our veterans on Veterans Day.

Edit:

One other thing. What do you think all the campaigning was about? Has Obama really done everything that he has promised? What was he saying about the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq? What about not hiring lobbyists for areas that they lobbied in? Yes, he has done some of what he said he was going to do, but what about all the rest. Was all the rest just to make the Republicans look worse than they are?

Yes, because as we all know "winning" is the end goal, to hell with the voters and their interests so long as we win!

No, it is the race of ice to the polls that surfndav was talking about elsewhere.

Actually, I only get this stuff from one of my conservative friends. None of my liberal friends send me this crap. My conservative friend relies on me to tell him if it's bogus or not but he still sends it along, regardless. Occasionally I'll debunk one but most of the time I'll just let it run it's course. I could waste a lot of time debunking all the stuff he sends me and, frankly, I'm not willing to do his work.

The hate/lie forwards run greater than 10/1 from the right. Most of the forwards about the right are from the right, and are about Bush praying with a soldier, etc. The negatives from the left are often satirical.

I didn't see the soup kitchen thread. I'll look.

Did you not read the body of my post and watch the video? He was being intoduced as POTUS, and the band was playing Hail To The Chief. Yes, I did the research myself. There is a lot of film available from that day, which was not Veterans day, by the way. If you want to research it yourself, refer to Memorial day in your searches

Nice diversion. Let's talk about something else... I know, let's talk about how Obama sucks! I'm less dissapointed in Obama than I have been in past presidents, on average, but; I though cash for clunkers was a bad idea, and poorly implemented. The idea of transparency seems to have evaporated.

What sort of link would you like? I thought the video in the op said enough. Open it in a new window and watch it next to the dubious photo.

Give it some time. He hasn't been in office a year yet. People were pretty happy with Bush too at some point in his Presidency, then it all turned to poo.
