not sure which version of the RXL's you're looking at, but the version with paired spokes doesn't have the best reputation for reliability. if i'm not mistaken the trek guys tend to replace these wheels (OEM on their bikes) with aftermarket wheels.
Would rather get a set of Blackset Race from BWW, Souls, or Neuvations that weigh less and are priced at or under $500.
I had a set from a 2003 road bike, rode them ~30,000km and they're still true as day one, but finally the brake track has worn down and finding replace Bonty rims w/ the paired spokes is unlikely. The hubs were OEM'd to Bonty from DT Swiss, I suspect that's why they last forever.
I wouldn't hesitate on any Race X Lite wheelset, they're damn good.
I had a 2006 pair and rear wheel rim cracked. Bontrager replaced and that rear wheel cracked. Bontrager wouldn't warranty ,said second replacement wheel was outside the warranty period. They have redesigned the wheels since then but I really think for what you would spend on a pair you would be better served getting a custom build wheelset. A pair of wheels with kinlin rims, white industry hubs and sapim c xray spokes would be around 100 grams lighter if not more and if done right, a better built wheel. The cost would be comparable.
Weight sounds about right. I have several sets that I use for winter wheels. Pretty tough little buggers and never go out of true. I had issues with I think the '08s (loose rear spokes, then a cracked rim) but my LBS replaced it no questions asked. The darn things hold true (as they should). The hubs are as good as they get and the rear hub doesn't flex. No sure about what years are what, but some of the hubs are DT Swiss, so you know they are good. Not that the Bonty stuff sucks, it doesn't, it is pretty durable, it just isn't sexy.
Most RXLs you see are take offs, and you should be able to find a new set for a couple hundred, well worth it IMHO.
