Take grips off, clean handlebars with rubbing alcohol, reinstall grips and squirt some aqua net or other really cheap and sticky hairspray inside the grips before sliding on the bars. Let dry overnight.
Uh, you do realize the fundamental differences between hair spray and hair gel, right? I'm surprised your grips didn't shoot off the bars without you ever touching them.
Raced BMX for years (before the dawn of lock-on grips)... tried it all, e.g. hairspray, glue... In the end, the best solution was:
1. Remove grips and clean grips and bar with soap and water - rinse well
2. Using 120 grit sand paper, scuff handlebar - use tape to create the stop line
3. Hold now dry grip and breath into it - seriously. Just like you'd fog your glasses to clean them
4. With one palm covering other end of the bar, start bumping the grip on with your other palm. Covering the other end of the bar, forces the air to inflate the grip momentarily - that's how it slips
5. Repeat on other side
You should be able to get affordable grips just about anywhere, eBay, amazon, etc. I got my last pair for my MTB on eBay, paid about $7. They aren't the lock on type, but they do match my bike
Yeah, gel definitely won't work. The more alcohol-based the hairspray the better. Aquanet worked great in the 80's and is what most of us freestyle guys used.
Some people would use spit, rubbing alcohol, or breathe into them, but Aquanet is what worked best for us. The other techniques would usually end up slipping if the bars got a little wet in the rain or even higher humidity days in the summer.
